Protecting Tova is the debuted novel by Havana Wilder and the first installment in the Iron Mountain saga. In a dystopian world ravaged by war, a dust has settled among the lands resulting in wiping out most of the life on earth. Those who survived have been altered, even the animals, in ways they are still discovering.

On a quest to deliverance, Tova’s plan has always been to learn self-defense and how to protect those who can’t defend themselves while overcoming the demons of her past.

The book is narrated from the perspective of both Tova & Pierce and how they view each other. Following their journey as protectors of the land, the reader watches the relationship grow between them, and self-built boundaries are dissolved, and healing takes place.

Being the first book in the series, Wilder sets the stage for the series and has detailed a world for you to dive into. I appreciated the time the author took to create Iron Mountain and describe the individuals in the book. I was able to picture them in my mind's eye. I wish there were more detail about the dust and the abilities individuals now possess due to surviving the storm. I assume as the series continues, we learn more about how it's shaped the land and people, which I find an intriguing take on a Dystopian novel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really liked the idea of this story - a dystopian setting where the world has been contaminated by something called Dust which made all but a select few territories uninhabitable. The survivors live in small communities where everyone specialises in a certain skill to contribute.

The scenery of the Iron Mountain territory is described beautifully. The forest and the fields were so vivid in my head while reading and I really enjoyed the worldbuilding aspect of the story.

Tova is portrayed as a picture-perfect character with a troubled past centered around her abusive father. For the first couple of chapters, she is introduced as a strong, independent female lead, but sadly for the rest of the story she turns into a submissive, lovesick teen.

If at all possible, Pierce is even more perfect than Tova. He’s strong and determined, caring and protective and so good looking. He has virtually no flaws except for being absolutely hysterical and not trusting Tova to manage any situation on her own, which made him a bit annoying.

Their love story progresses much too quickly for my liking. It’s basically based on nothing but their physical attraction to each other and Tova goes from being traumatised to wanting to marry somebody she doesn’t even know that well in a matter of pages. This part of the plot frankly is extremely shallow as there is no real development going on. „Problems“ arise and are dealt with immediately just for the sake of their existence and taking the edge off of the insta-love trope - but it all seemed rather half-heartedly done.

The lack of obstacles throughout the whole plot bugged me as well. The girls manage to each beat ten guys who have been training years as compared to their afternoon, they accommodate to their new-found abilities almost instantly and don’t struggle with the physical strain of their training at all. Except for the final scenes, there was no direct threat either.

The aspect about this book that I struggled the most with, though, was the writing style. There was very much telling and not much showing - just look at Pierce‘s first chapter where he basically explains his life in a monologue that isn’t prompted by anything but the need to give him some background. The girl friends characterise Tova‘s perfect character in endless monologues and one of the girls isn’t even mentioned anymore once she chooses a different career path than the others. Also, most of the dialogue is extremely unrealistic - nobody talks like that in real life. This is definitely what made me feel most disconnected from the story, because it sadly just made everything seem so flat.

2/5 stars.

I received an autographed copy from the author. The books cover is absolutely stunning and helps bring the characters to life in my mind, and the author is as sweet as apple pie. Protecting Tova is categorized as fantasy, but for me, the content was more dystopian romance as much of the novel is about Tova and Pierce falling in love and about life on Iron Mountain after a deadly dust was unleashed on the land. Tova is attacked in the first quarter of the novel, but there are no other threats until the very ending. I enjoyed learning about all of the characters abilities and would have liked to have seen them in action in a real life setting battling attackers rather than on a practice arena, but the book ends on a cliff hanger and considering the amount of books in the series, I think I’ll get to see that unfold in the sequels.

An open end? Nooooooo! Open ends drive me nuts, but if the author decides to torture us like that, what can you do? 🤔😉 My not so favorite thing first: I am not a big fan of using bad language or using the Lords name in vain, but it is spread throughout the book and not constant and doesn’t take away from the story. (Plus, it is just my personal preference and just because I don’t like something, doesn’t mean others won’t.) Now the awesome stuff about the book: The story is interesting and keeps you reading. You can’t help but fall in love with the characters and it is easy to let your imagination suck you into their world. The author did an incredible job making everything come to life. Protecting Tova definitely deserves every star. If you love a good love story and a compelling read, this book is definitely for you!!!!

I received this book for an honest review. All expressed opinions, cynical or otherwise, are my own.

Dystopian settings are still limping along, aren’t they? Just like Zombie novels (what lurch), these beasts have survived a pandemic and all the subsequent nonsense in a desperate fight to remain relevant. Most experiment, toying with odd doomsday scenarios, wacky situations and otherwise to stand out. Protecting Tova takes a more traditional path. Clear writing wins the day, but there are monsters to tackle and problems looming on that event horizon.
The world has been tainted, and not just by sweaty alpha gangs. Most places are uninhabitable by human life (though personally, I would count the latter infested territory as also wasteland). Tova is the female protagonist among a small group of survivors, dealing with a tormented past. Pierce is her obvious romantic hook-up, superpower wielding eventual protector, and so on. Bad decisions follow.

The writing in the first few chapters is anxiogenic; fast, descriptive, and evocative. There is no question about placement, setting, or background. The characters are firmly planted in the scene, and the transitions are well timed. Pacing is also superb.

There are, however, some normal growing pains: later chapters can suffer from bloat, and stilted dialogue can make the cast feel wooden. Or even, too perfect (Mary Sue, I am looking at you). Furthermore, it just felt like they were never truly challenged, aside from how quick they can form a romantic connection. I know this book is marketed as an “instant attraction novel,” but this makes a summer romance look like a ten-year courtship.

Yet, the book is entertaining, and the aforementioned ‘problems’ are not relevant if your intended audience is only interested in a light, fun read. Protecting Tova, does what it aims to do in a conventional, clean sort of way. Unlike the apocalypse, which will most likely be messy.

PROTECTING TOVA is the first book in the Iron Mountain series and, fair warning, it ends on a massive cliffhanger.

Set in a dystopian future where Dust has caused irreparable damage to a 'normal' way of life and also given some special abilities, we join the story when Tova is a decider. She needs to figure out where she wants to train, although she can retrain if it isn't a good fit. She has some great girlfriends but holds herself aloof to men for reasons you learn about. Pierce is instantly attracted to her, his ability literally raising the temperature when they are together. Love rarely runs smoothly though, and someone is out to hurt Tova and her friends. Can they find out who it is before someone is killed?

For a debut novel there was lots here for me to like! The pacing worked for the story, speeding up at some moments but giving moments of peace for others. Tova and Pierce are a bit too perfect for me, but I still enjoyed them. I liked how Pierce was there for her and wouldn't allow her to push him away. Once the decision was made to be together, it moved ahead full throttle.

The world-building was brilliant, giving clear descriptions of Iron Mountain and the surrounding areas. I would like a bit more information about the various trading centres but that may come in future stories.

As I've already said, it does end on a cliffhanger so prepare yourself. It answers some questions, yet still leaves you wanting more.

A thoroughly enjoyable start to a new series by a new-to-me author. Definitely one I will be continuing and absolutely recommended by me.

I really enjoyed this book! This is a new adult dystopian fantasy. Iron Mountain is one of the last communities after the dust destroyed the majority of the population. The dust also gave different mutations and abilities to humans and animals alike.
Tova is a decider, someone who has yet to choose in what way they will serve the community. Having survived a horrific childhood, she is determined to make her own way and keep people at a distance.
I really enjoyed the depictions of her PTSD and the glimpses we are shown of how broken she is before Pierce.
Pierce is a farmer turned protector, someone trained in keeping others safe from the dangers beyond their community. He knows that Tova has secrets and is determined to help her work through it. He is compassionate, kind, strong, and patient. I adored how he continued to fight for her every day even when she didn't feel like it herself. He is very honorable towards her.
Their relationship was so romantic. It was love at first sight. Pierce is truly the protector she needs to face the demons of her past so that they can move forward with their lives. I'm really hoping to see more of Tova fighting for Pierce in the next one.
My one concern was how quickly they fell in love. They went from barely speaking to madly in love based on a single incident. The plot was predictable but still very enjoyable. I loved the horses, the training scenes, and the lake.
Trigger Warnings: this book contains assault and sexual assault of a minor. The steam level is YA.

In a post-apocalyptic dystopian world where the world has been contaminated by Dust, the population is sequestered into small habitable territories where people use their skills to contribute to the well-being and safety to help support their new way of life.

As much as I wanted to give this a try, and even with the consistent reminders to myself that it is a Kindle Unlimited, self-published, so the standards must be lower than that of a book mass published from a popular publishing agency, I had to stop but not before I made it to the 50% mark.

The relationship honestly made me cringe. The Southern setting felt too forced. From first date to sudden marriage like in a month, it was cringe-nation. Completely unrealistic conversations between them. The conversations throughout the story made no sense. Some felt too forced. It is completely unrealistic. And the method to provide character background or description is dropped in the first paragraph of that person, and then never again.

At first, Tova appears to be this strong, tough female lead. But as the story unfolds, she reminds me of a whining love sick teenager with an identity crisis.

Pierce is some macho-tough man that clearly is God's gift to the world with his perfection. And leave it to him to not trust Tova to do one thing on her own. He treats her like she is an absolute baby that needs coddled.

Any bit of action or storyline progression at the half mark is beyond me. Because the only theme for the moment was the forced relationship between Tova and Pierce, and she may turn into a cat or some creature and literally random animal attack her?

I went into this book completely blind and though I wasn't disappointed, I wasn't blown away either. Overall, it's a decent book with a few things here and there that could be improved on. For example, Tova and Pierce declare their love to each other less than a day after a drop-down, drag out fight (over a misunderstanding, yes, but still). When Pierce's powers manifest (at 12 years old, he says), his control over his flame is enough that he can focus them down to just sparks, and carefully burn away fabric into strips. That's some good control for a 12 year old that just discovered his powers.

Tova needs to learn how to swear like everyone else around her. Between "Crap noogies" and "what in the flyingflitterflotter", I was wishing she'd just drop an f-word or something.

Any problems I had with this, overall, were just small ones like mentioned above. I'm not PERSONALLY a fan of present tense, nor am I a fan of a switching first-person POV. But, as that is a stylistic choice, I did not count that against the author.

Overall 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

Protecting Tova is an awesome debut book. I received an ARC for an honest review. Wilder did a superb job creating what the world could look like after a Dust Pandemic kills most of the population. The story focuses on a young girl, by the name of Tova and the journey that brings love, self discovery and peaceful sleep into her life. Not everything in Tova's life has been pretty or easy, but she finds the strength to keep her head above water and survive.

Havana Wilder's debut novel transports you to a magical world where dramatic love and intense danger are everyday situations. I loved her world building, and the detail she put into each of her characters - you felt like you could really know them as friends. And don't even get me started on Pierce - where can I find one? The pacing was excellent, and the ending leaves you eager for book two.

This was such a unique dystopian story. I really loved the world-building and hope there will be even more in the next novel. The characters were compelling and I loved reading from both Tova and Pierce’s perspectives. Overall, the writing was great, but some of the dialogue felt forced at times, and the insta-love was a little too instant for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of insta-love, I just wish it had been drawn out a few more chapters—to build tension and show more romantic development between Tova and Pierce. But none of that took away from my enjoyment of the story. The plot was fast-paced and kept me engaged. There was quite a lot of action as well as sweet romantic moments. And that ending…you’ll definitely want to have book two on hand because that was a crazy cliffhanger!!

I had a lot of fun reading this novel and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes dystopian settings, sarcastic banter, and captivating characters.

Content warnings: profanity, intimate moments, discussion of physical and sexual abuse, violence

⭐Protecting Tova is the first book under the Iron Mountain Series. And the book truly gives you a ‘this is just the beginning’ feeling. Havana Wilder has successfully managed to keep the balance between the romance and fantasy elements in this book. Right when you think that this is going to be another fantasy romance, she switches it to a fantasy thriller. But what I really loved is the concept of the apocalyptic 'Dust' that wiped out most of the world population and "changed" the survivors. I also really loved the "abilities" of the characters in the book. And the fast paced romance fits perfectly with the rest of the plot.
⭐What you see in the book cover is what you are going to meet in the book. The cover says it all. There are some amazing creatures and people, and the world the author has created is just beautiful.
⭐Great job Havana Wilder 👏👏👏 Can't wait for the next one ❤

I could not put this book down. Tons of character and world development. Such a great first book and I personally can’t wait for the second book to be released to see where these characters lives take them. The story line has a sweet and savory pull. You have the heart filled relationships aspect, as well as, a heroin battling her demons and feeling comfortable in her own skin aspect in one story. Definitely a first love sweetness that pulled me in and brought all the feels that makes you fall in love with the characters. As a fellow Georgian, I absolutely enjoyed the southern “wholesomeness” in parts of the story. The whole story itself kept a smile on my face and allowed me to attach myself to the story in many ways.

Where in the world do I even begin! This book is an absolute amazing read. Havana Wilder, has done an amazing job writing this story. The characters are perfectly written. The Plot is amazing. I felt like I couldn't get enough. It has been a long time since I have truly enjoyed reading a book this much. I love reading romance novels but the one thing I don't like, is how they drag out the main characters love story. BUT, Havana she got right to it and I was so happy! It gave more time to the actual story line/plot. Yes, part of the plot/story line is about Pierce and Tova falling in love BUT there was so much more to it! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SECOND BOOK TO COME OUT! Havana you have truly done an amazing job with this book!!

This was an interesting book that I enjoyed reading. In this book I enjoyed reading samples of two genres that are not really my first natural choice for subject matter, those being Romance and Fantasy. In this case, combined into one!

I do have to admit I don't think I'm really the target audience for this work, so I'm not sure I'm really qualified to review the 'Romance' part of the story!

It's the story of Tova, and her friends, plus her main love interest, Pierce, and his friends, and how Tova and Pierce fall in love, while defending themselves in the often dangerous dystopian world they live in, residing in their protected area which values and preserves community and family in a very large walled-in area they refer to as their territory.

The basic world view explanation for why the people live where they do and as they do is competent, though not really highly detailed in explaining their world. The main element which has created the life the characters live is something called Dust, which was meant as a genocidal weapon, but has changed into a potent affecter of evolution, leading to a variety of special powers and uniquely evolved life forms in what was once the State of Georgia, in the former USA, which, like all countries around the world, has now fallen to pieces after the genocidal attack with Dust greatly reduced the world population.

The characters are well developed and the writing is well formed. The book uses a device of alternating chapters between the perspectives of the lead male and lead female characters respectively, which gives a fun and interesting angle on the story as it unfolds.

Just as with personal taste, it's hard to criticize fantasy. You can't say someone's fantasy is 'wrong' after all, just as you can't say their opinion or taste is wrong. For example, I'm tempted to ask how a fatal and genocidal weapon like the Dust in the story can also become the source of fantastical and wonderful powers and abilities, which the characters are constantly discovering in themselves during the whole story? But hey, it's Fantasy, so it doesn't have to conform to Sci Fi science explanations! This conceptual approach of Fantasy is unfamiliar to me, but it's a fun element in the story telling.

As for the Romance part, it's extremely emotional and lovey dovey, so I guess that's what readers of this genre are looking for, and as far as I can tell the average Romance reader will enjoy the courting and flirting aspects, as well as the sexual situations and innuendo which comprises the majority of the story.

The other main themes of the story are fighting, and Tova's personal abilities, plus her struggles with emotional trauma from her childhood. If I have any quibbles with the story it's these three points:

1. There's a point in the early portion of the story where the two main characters have an unexpected falling out. However I found the reason for their falling out to be pretty obvious, and later in the chapter it turned out that I was right. I think that such a creative author should perhaps try to create conflict with situations that are maybe more multi-dimensional and less obvious, and perhaps contain some double-entendres, which could create a more convincing reason why the two main characters might experience a sudden rift between them.

2. As Tova learns to become a better fighter, her boyfriend Pierce teaches her "self defense" moves in about 20 minutes. With that knowledge she is able to beat up basically two NFL linebackers at once by herself with repeated strikes to the groin. For one thing, I don't like to encourage girls to think self defense by striking a man's groin is going to be easy, because men are naturally protective of that area, and just turning their hips to the side can eliminate almost all chance of being struck there. And secondly, I don't think it is safe to help girls think that it's that easy to just deactivate the men by trying to hit them there. Especially when there are two of them the size of linebackers attacking at the same time. Much better to encourage women to stay out of dangerous situations in the first place, and to run from danger to get help as a first choice. I know we see these types of fight scenes in the movies all the time, but they frankly aren't realistic. I guess that is just the concerned uncle in me coming out.

3. Lastly, the evolution of the Tova character herself is a bit off, in my opinion, because even after she has faced her trauma, enjoyed the unconditional support of everyone around her plus her new boyfriend, and trained to be a deadly fighter, attaining even more super powers as the story unfolds, even up the last scene she is still trembling and fearful due to her past. I kind of think at that point she should perhaps feel nervous, but then push the old fears away and then triumphantly dispatch her main enemy once and for all. In fact, at the final fight scene she is standing there with a knife in one hand and a hatchet in the other, and I thought she would just lop off her old enemy's head and finish him off, but the final battle didn't turn out the way I expected. I feel she should have been more fully 'accomplished' for the last scene of the book, and that the cliff hanger might have been caused from something else, for example, an unexploded pocket of Dust she accidently steps on right at the end of the book.

But except for those three points, and for the fact that I felt sort of outside of the Romance angle as I read, I think it was a well written book that readers of the genre and fans of the author should certainly enjoy, and I would recommend Protecting Tova to any fans of the Romance and Fantasy genres.

Enjoyable start to a new series.

This was an entertaining new dystopian romance read with some action and suspense.

Tova was a sassy, strong heroine with a tragic past who came into her powers eloquently.

Pierce was a worthy and protective hero with a lovable family.

I enjoyed their fun banter, their instant attraction, the friendships they held, and the obstacles they overcame together.

I look forward to the next book in the series.

This book was proposed to me as an ARC, so I didn't look into it further to keep myself from getting spoiled or having any pre-conceived notions about it. I should have, I would have realized I was duped as an ARC reader and this book has been out for 2 years. It is a complete waste of an ARC reader's time to misrepresent the publication date of a book. For anyone who doesn't know what an ARC is, it stands for Advance Readers Copy. Authors send these out for reviews prior to the publication date for both promotional material and for consumers to get a sense of the book before purchasing. I will be leaving this team following this review, as all 6 books have been out for quite some time. That being said, how I have been treated has no impact on my review - I did not know the above until I came to post my review. I am only including this for those doing research prior to joining the ARC team, these are all published.

I would like to start first with the editing, the book really needs an editor. It feels like it was pulled right off of wattpad and published, very repetitive sentences with both spelling and grammatical errors. I very rarely point this out in reviews, because I do think that editing preferences are subjective, but this does take away from the story for me. I did also download the KU version of the story too and gave that a read-through to see if it was just errors corrected between ARC copies and Published copies, and they are the same.

The story itself had so much potential, its a very interesting premise and seems like its Ruthless Boys meets The 100 - a dystopian fantasy. Last of humankind with some biological changes given the changed environment. I was very excited for the story when I signed up for this. This had the potential for some big worldbuilding, and instead the information about the environment/society/ect mostly came from infodumps between people that didn't really make sense until later in the book. I would wonder why xyz fact was relevant when there was no buildup to why that may be important. Just flat statements. The characters lacked depth from me, again with the info dumping. We don't really get backstories on the FMC or MMC until they trauma dump at each other or friends and they don't have a character growth arc throughout the story. I'm actually still unsure what the plot of the story is after two read-throughs.

I will be DNF-ing the rest of the series.

This was a really great Debut, with a unique take on the Dystopian theme, combing a perfect blend of action, adventure, romance, and both internal and external exploration and discovery. And while it definitely has those Dystopian, and even some Fantasy elements, it is at its heart a Love story, both romantic and of the friendship/familial variety. It's also about hope and healing and deals with some PTSD elements (and dealing with them in a healthy way with a good support system around you). Tova and Pierce definitely deserve to have their story told and this really only feels like the beginning...like the stage is now set for a lot more to happen in this world.

I liked the sort of "war games" elements as they trained in their Protector role's (one of the job roles of their neo society), along with the fantasy elements that came into the story line (the Dust that caused the plague that wiped out most of society has now caused genetic mutations giving people certain "powers"), and would like to have seen a even more of these aspects, and assume we will as the series continues.

I personally like cliff-hangers so I was totally down with the ending, but for those who don't - consider yourself forewarned. Overall it reminded me a bit of Red Queen or Hunger Games, but with a softer side especially with the addition of some of the pastoral scenes/settings. I'd say this is perfect for YA and New Adult audiences. I definitely look forward to exploring how this world develops, along with finding out more about Tova's powers/abilities, and seeing Tova and Pierce's relationship continue to develop.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. All statements and opinions are my own.

Book : Defending Pierce
Version : Kindle
Author : Havana Wilder

This book is the part 2 of the series with regard to Iron Mountain, the parallel universe beyond the earth that has to be protected from the attacks as well from the effects of dust ( residue of the elements that destroyed the people several hundred years ago). We have protectors whose job is to protect the iron mountain. The first book is about protecting the female protagonist Tova.
Here the book begins with a breathtaking incident where Tova is injured and she is dangling between life and death. When she opens her eyes she understands she is protected by a team that has Pierce and the medical team that has Mr.Hughes. They recollect the incidents of the horrors where Iron Mountain is attacked and the way several protectors were injured and wounded due to the attacks.
Pierce gets to know about the laboratory of Mr. Hughes which surprises him. As Tova recovers Pierce and she start to discuss about the way Iron mountain , their friends and Pierce can be protected. The story takes a different turn as a few protectors’ start conspiring against Pierce and start doubting him.
Each chapter begins with the image of Tova and Pierce , and the story is very interactive. The cover page has amazing colour combination and it is attractive.
The writing style and narration is gripping. The characterization is amazing. The bond between the team members of protectors is well described.
Will Tova ever recover and be back to her normal self?
What happens to Pierce ?
Will Pierce be able to become a protector that he had always imagined?
How is Mr.Hughes instrumental in saving all of them?
A lot of questions , aren’t they?
Do read the book to co-journey with Pierce and Tova.

Story of life in a dystopian world where those individuals who have survived the biochemical Dust Event that killed millions and turned animals and humans alike into mutated beast. The few people who survived have acquired special abilities that have developed over time.

Tova’s story was heartbreaking. Abused as a child at the hands of her father she has nightmares every night and unable to trust men. Tova was a fun character to read about because she was determined, resilient and funny. Her inner monologue was hilarious. Tova is of age where she can choice a profession to train for in order to do her part to help build their dystopian society. Tova is on a path of self-discovery and growth. She has no desire to leave the confines of her community because beyond the perimeter she knows the forest is saturated with savages and mutated beasts; but she knows that the only way to be of any assistance to anyone is to learn self-defense and to learn how to protect those who can’t protect themselves while overcoming the demons of her past.

Everything changes for Tova when she meets Pierce. It was love at first sight for Pierce who knew Tova was the one for him. As he trains to become a “Protector” he works overtime to break through Tova’s walls and proving to her that he isn’t like her father. As Pierce and Tova’s relationship grows it becomes painfully apparent that someone has other plans for her. With a failed attempt on her life Pierce refuses to leave her side and makes it his personal mission to train her in the art of self-defense and weaponry to keep her protected from the dangers that lurk beyond the perimeter.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I read this book in one sitting. It was great for the most part. I love the fact that this was a fantasy based on humans altered by science rather than on werewolves (because let's face it, there are far too many werewolf books out there which are allllllll about the werewolf powers). The history of the main characters was brought out very well, the world building was perfect (not too.mich and not too little).

I found some of the characters really up to my liking but others were left a bit flat and not fleshed out well. Also, I did find that the relationship between the two main character progressed at lightning speed. However, there was a time skip of a month so that could account for the 0-100 speed of the relationship. I found that the relationship between the side couple was a bit more believable.

There were some spots where I was left cringing at times because of the dialogue. Personally, if someone who I hardly knew unloaded upon me like that, I would have been high tailing it out of there! There were also spots where I was left wondering if the characters were just asking for trouble. When there is a dangerous situation, do you just wander off on your own? No! You stick with a group. It seemed almost as though these people just "forgot" that there was a threat.

Overall, this was a good book and a nice difference in the usual fantasy genre. I will be reading book 2 now because cliffhanger!

A post-apocalyptic YA fantasy, Protecting Tova has a lot of great attributes. I'm on the fence with this one.
I really wanted to love it, Havana Wilder is a creative and expressive writer, but the story just fell flat for me. The concept of the Dust (an engineered bioweapon intended to destroy all living things on earth) mutating what survived (mostly animals and humans) is well done. The world-building and backdrop to the story are unique and creative. This instant love connection is not my cup of tea (I like angst), but ultimately is fine and moves the story along. The real issue I have is the sections that drew me in and caught my attention were done quickly and were over before they started. Whereas some of the super sweet friend scenes were bloated and repeated, making the read rather boring. Everyone is so nice to each other and helpful, there are no real challenges for the group, internal or external. Everything just keeps working out in a predictive way that leaves me wanting more. The interesting and creative sections like the group discovering powers or even understanding the antagonist are blown by so quickly or barely hit on, they seem like an afterthought. Some of the decisions in the story seem silly - some random person just shot at me, let me walk back through that same path again with no fear or consequence, or go off to smell the flowers when we know someone is trying to attack me. Ultimately, this was not my favorite but it had a lot of strong parts that kept me reading. If you want a quick sweet read with an interesting backdrop this book is for you.

I really enjoyed the concept of the book. A dystopian world where a thing called the Dust has wiped out a majority of the population. Leaving those who remain to create settlements for protection and leaving some survivors with lingering effects from the Dust.

The main character, Tova, is described as a “spitfire”, independent, guarded, weary of new people and was someone who preferred solitude.. For the first few chapters, she seems exactly that, but as the book progresses, too quickly in my opinion, her walls tumble down and she becomes a love-sick girl.

Pierce, Tova’s love interest, is strong, protective, and honestly a little too obsessive for me. Their romance progresses so quickly that there is no actual building of the relationship. Their romance progressed so quickly that it eliminated the purpose of stating Tova was someone who had walls up, was damaged or weary of new people. It felt like any potential character growth from Tova was eliminated and instead she shrank into someone less.

Lastly, I’m a reader who likes to be shown things through actions. A lot of the book felt like incredibly long monologues that point blank just told me things instead of showing me. Additionally, the way the character’s spoke bothered me. They spoke in ways normal conversations wouldn’t take place, which threw me off. If you’re looking for something fast-paced, detailed and light to read I think you’d like the book. It’s just not my preferred writing style.

I really enjoyed this book.

The story centres around a group of people living in Iron Mountain, one of only a few remaining habitable areas following an event that wiped out most of humanity changing those that survived due to toxic dust. Those that remain are tasked with deciding their future profession when they turn 18, and repopulating their areas.

This book centres on the relationship between Tova and Pierce and their close group.

The story itself for me was brilliant. I loved the world building and the characters. That being said, I do have a few issues (hence it not being a 5 star rating). Its definitely YA with no swearing I've seen, and some talk of heavy petting (kissing).

The MCs are great, but I'm a bit confused about their thought processes. Sometimes I feel a bit like they are speaking thoughts out loud and that the dialogue is a bit pointless and repetitive.

There is also a real lack of internal thoughts and feelings (feelings being the main issue) which makes it difficult to engage and empathise with the Main Characters so it causes a bit of a disconnect. Some more elaboration on this to help rationalise the actions and thought processes of the characters would help massively.

Overall Havana has done an incredible job translating this dystopian world into a novel and I look forward to seeing how it develops. I have Defending Pierce ready to go.

3.5/5 ⭐️

Protecting Tova is set in a dystopian world where war and the Dust have changed the landscape and decimated the population. The Dust changed the land, animals, and even the people. The people left behind are still figuring out the extent of the effects of the Dust. Tova lives in an enclosed community, one of the few safe places left. Everyone has to contribute, and Tova is determined to train as a Protector.

Tova is a stubborn, smarta** heroine and is very easy to root for. She trains hard to drown out memories of abuse from her childhood. And she doesn’t want anyone to distract her...That is, until Pierce comes along. They have an instant attraction and I really enjoyed how they both championed each other’s strengths. I would have liked to see even more of them getting to know each other, but their relationship gives me that first-love feeling and is really sweet.

They have to learn to trust each other quickly - someone is targeting Tova. She won’t be safe until they figure out who it is, and it will take trusting Pierce and her friends to get to the bottom of it.

Fair warning, there’s a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of this book! I’m curious to see what happens next in Defending Pierce...

This book is from a dual point of view, jumping between Tova and Pierce. This author does. A fantastic job with her descriptions, leaving nothing to the imaginations. She is very detailed and includes photos of the characters in the chapters. I love that the author gives us insight into the drama we keep seeing Tova wake up from but beware, this book should have a trigger warning as it discusses the reason for her nightmares. This book is sweet and sad. The characters deal with a lot of emotions and past issues and decide they love each other. On top of the emotional problems, they also seem to have unique talents.

I love the fantasy world this author has set this story in and all the history and info for the reader to understand her world. It doesn’t have a name. It is just talked about as a place like a colony on Iron Mountain. The people are human but with some unique talents. The society is exciting and definitely unique to this story that the author has created. This story heats up as events lead the character on an adventure that could have some significant consequences.

The love story between Pierce and Tova is sweet, and I love how protective he is. She is strong, and her strength shows even though she battles her own demons. The story ends with a massive cliffhanger and a ton of intense action.

The author did a great job of leading the reader on an intriguing journey with her characters and the characters they interact with. I enjoy the family aspects and words of wisdom she brought into the story. The cliffhanger is so shocking. I can’t wait to read more and find a resolution to the story and the couple I’ve enjoyed reading about. The epilogue at the end of the book really doesn’t give anything away to the reader for the upcoming second book in this series.
