Rate this book
Adelita Corazón knows her secret ability can't remain hidden forever, but when a rebel faction hunts her down, everything she thought she could handle goes up in flames.

When three men from a warrior tribe collide with her attackers, it's all Adelita can do to hold on to her secret, and what's left of her heart. There are many things the warriors are known for, but kindness isn't one of them. Yet the longer they travel together, the more Adelita realizes there's more to them than muscle and magic... and more to her than her secret.

When her abilities come to light, Adelita isn't sure if the guys can offer a safe place to hide, or if the trouble they bring might be worse than a life without their protection. Though she knows she has to leave them, her heart tells her to stay...

...Even if it means certain death.

If you like Veronica Roth, Bella Forrest, and first kisses with a bit of sweetness and scandal, you'll love this urban fantasy romance series with a dystopian edge. The series is based in Hispanic folklore, with an entirely Hispanic cast of characters.

Adelita is only as strong as she is gentle - and it may be that her gentleness is more powerful than her superhuman strength. Suddenly ripped from everything she knows by three warriors, running from fate worse than death, she finds something surprising. This book is about their journey from her home where she was attacked, to their safe spot, but also the story of three brothers in arms adding a new member to their band. As with Mary Twomey's other books, this is heavily relationship and character driven. There is the beginning of a slow burn romance that revolves around safety, acceptance and companionship. This book stays clean.

This is the first book in a series and as such it does quite a bit of world building and drops all sorts of tantalizing hints about the ruthless rebel faction, their history with the three warriors, and what they might want with Adelita. Magic, curses, unnatural science experiments and a mysterious deadly woman haunting dreams. I can't wait to see where this one goes next.

Our heroine has gifts which she keeps hidden, because there are always those that want to hold power for their own use.

This is a paranormal romance/urban fantasy with a Hispanic background. We get a lot of stories based on American or European mythology, so it is nice to see the little differences a change of culture bring about. It also helps that the story is well written and easy to read with an excellent cast of characters. Our heroine and heroes are a diverse group each with their own distinct personality, but the quickly learn how to support each other and work as a team. The plot is fast paced and full of twists and turns, so you are never quite sure what comes next. Overall, a fun and exciting story and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

Good Start

I mainly enjoyed this because Adelita is nice and knows how to stand up to Cruz, but mostly because Santos is the sweetest thing ever. Adelita and Santos together is the sweetest thing ever.

Ravi is pretty cute and he's a really good guy. I'm really looking forward to Cruz loosening up a bit. That guy needs to chill.

I want to know more about the Kalku's plans for Adelita and why Santiago rescued and blessed her that day.

It was first the cover that attracted me to this title. The woman on it is Latin so that changes nicely. I like diversity because it is diversity that makes the world nicer. The summary convinced me to read this first book.

The universe created by the author is well constructed and coherent for what I could see. Exactly in my favorite genre with novelty on the mythological side. I am waiting to discover more to have a better view.

If the beginning seemed a bit chaotic to me, I was quickly drawn into the story which is more like a survival road trip.

The narration is being carried out by several characters, it is good that the author has thought of notifying us who it is at the beginning of each chapter. I find it helpful to have different points of view.

The characters are all very interesting even if I have a lot of trouble with Cruz. Many times he makes you want to kill him in his sleep. I much prefer to follow the evolution between Santos and Adelita.

The ending is literally grrr. You clearly want to know the rest given the way it ends. What I want and will do when it will be published.

My reading was pleasant and the author's pen fluid. I want strongly the continuation.

I didn't know Mary E. Twomey before reading this title, but being French, I discover English-writing authors almost every week.

I absolutely loved this book! All of the characters and their personalities mixed and interacted perfectly with each other. The three good guys, Cruz, Raphael, and Santos are all swoon worthy in their own ways. They are not your typical supernatural creatures. There's more to each of them than meets the eye. Adelita is a young and in many ways innocent woman with supernatural abilities. When they all meet, there are many explosions. Adelita and Cruz face off with each other and demand to be obeyed while keeping their secrets. Adelita and Raphael share a friendly and flirtatious banter. Adelita and Santos have a child-like quality to them that they compliment and balance each other out. While on the run and trying to evade the kulkas, will Adelita and the guys learn to trust each other or will their egos get in the way?

I loved this book. This is the first book in the trilogy, and I was completely enthralled. The magic and supernatural creatures are different than what I have typically read. Ms. Twomey's ability to weave a new world filled with rich characters while the plot slowly unfolds is magical. She introduces and mixes different cultures while interacting their boogeyman. I highly recommend this book. This does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. Thank you Booksprout for gifting me this book. I look forward to reading the rest of this captivating trilogy. This was my honest opinion.

There is absolutely nothing that I would want to change in this book. The characters are superbly crafted and have such depth and vibrancy to them that they leap off the pages and the story itself is easy to read and kept me enthralled from page one making me read far too late into the night and keeping me away from everything I should have been doing.

Adelita is a therapist who has worked incredibly hard to get where she is. She and her mother both worked as cleaners to get her through school and then on the day of her graduation her mom is killed in a bus crash but Adelita is pulled from the wreckage by a mysterious stranger who tells her that she will be as strong as she is gentle and it turns out she has an incredibly gentle nature with a physical strength to match. When she is attacked outside work one day two men and a wolf come to her rescue and then kidnap her. I loved the evolution of the relationship between Adelita and the three men, Rafi, Santos and Cruz. As you get to know each of these characters better the more they creep into your heart and the more invested you become in each of their stories. Each of them will fill your heart, break your heart and give you hope but there is a dangerous organisation that is after Adelita.

Adelita is a therapist with no family left, gentle and compassionate heart, and super strength. When attacked by unknown men, she is rescued by three strangers that obviously know more about the world she belongs to; only getting along with them is no easy feat. Cruz is a military control freak, Rafael is a flirt, and Santos is cursed mute with low comprehension of the real world out of slavery due to his long captivity and mistreatment. Opening up to them is not easy, and trust is a whole other level of trouble, but if she wants to escape the Kalku and survive, she may just need to learn how to deal with her protectors.
There is a lot of sweetness and gentleness in the story, showing the beauty where the outer world brings prejudice and disdain, and pointing towards what is important. The changing POV brings understanding to the main characters and helps building up the complicated dynamics in the relationships among the group of misfits. Adelita is a very likable heroine with much more strength than just her physical one, and the three men accompanying her each have their own charm, with their flaws and issues. The world building leaves some details to be filled in still, but the drama and the romance drive the plot forward at a fast pace.

I can’t even express how much I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and that viewpoints from different characters were included. Mostly I liked that I could feel what the characters felt. That’s my favorite thing about Mary’s writing- I feel like I’m inside the characters’ soul. Sounds cheesy but I’m not sure how else to explain it. I also like how she fits in concerns about social injustice, and in a way that’s not awkward or overly obvious. Your attention is drawn to an issue that you might not have otherwise thought of and sometimes in a way you wouldn’t have thought of it. That’s the beauty of Mary’s writing and benefit if this book being from different perspectives.

I can’t say enough how much I loved this book!

The only thing I did not like is that it ended and I have to wait for the next book to come out!!

Physical strength tempered with love and gentleness. Adelita grew up with only her mom. Her was loving, smart, and worked as a maid. Adelita worked two jobs, studied well and went to college and earned her degree as a therapist. But two years ago the bus she and her mom were in was strut by a drunk driver and only Adelita survived, pulled from the wreckage by someone named Santiago, who gave her enhanced abilities and some advice before he ran away. She has had extreme strength since she was born, but not it is off the charts and she has to be careful she doesn’t damage things. But now she has been attacked and three guys with special abilities save her, tell her they are taking her somewhere safe away from the Kalku who want to use her for evil purposes. But she doesn’t want her life turned upside down and of the three guys she only trust two. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

Adelita is a therapist with a big secret, but there is a group (Kalku) hunting people like her, and she might not be safe. She is lucky that 3 men (Cruz, Rafael and Santos) jump in to help her when trouble comes her way. Can she trust these men to protect her? Will they keep her safe from the Kalku? Adelita feels an attraction to Cruz, Rafael and Santos, does this have a chance of working? Or will they drop her once they get her to safety? I loved Adelita, she has lots of fire and a big heart, but she has much to learn with the change of her circumstances. I love the different personalities of Cruz, Rafael and Santos, and I can't really pick a favourite (because I love them all), maybe the next book will help me figure it out. I am looking forward to the next book.

This is the first book in the series and we are just getting to know each character. Cruz is not very nice, very abrasive, Santo’s is my favourite scars and all and Rafael is a womanizer. The three save Adelita from being captured by the Kalku. She has a superpower but does not know how to control or use it. I only gave it four stars because there are a lot of questions that are not answered and not enough background story to understand what is happening and why. However it is easy to read and a page turner.

Adelita was alone in the world. If not happy, at least content. The loss of her mother in a horrific bus accident ached like a phantom limb... Gone but never forgotten. The grief and guilt, at times, was nearly overwhelming, but Adelita knew she couldn't change what had occurred; she could only move forward... But Fate or Destiny, or perhaps simply Evil, had other plans... Adelita soon finds herself engulfed in violence.... Rescued by A crew of mysterious strangers, Adelita discovers the world is NOT as she had always perceived it...

A fast paced, intense story that will leave your mind spinning! Can hardly WAIT for the next book

Love it!

My first read from the author and i love it!

Their chemistry is slow burn but adorably melt your heart.
With Santos being survivor from captivity and slavery, his connection with Adelita flow like sunshine to his darkness.
With Rafi... They are still in knock his heart gently to trust as friend kinda fase.
With Cruz, whoa their enemy vibe is strong. Its harder to crack Cruz shell with his stubborness and aholeness but its thawing alright.

The down side of this book? No smegsi time! Uurgh! Lol

This is the first book in the series. I found it to be interesting. The characters were good. Santos is my favorite, scars and all. Cruz is a jerk with issues and Rafael is a smooth talker with feelings. Adelita is complicated. I thought the story was good. The ending was a bit abrupt, but the story itself is good. I would recommend it.

WOW! ORIGINAL! AWESOME WORLD BUILDING! FLAWED CHARACTERS YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE! Seriously I don't know what to say to make y'all start this series. This is so unique and interesting. The characters each have such fascinating personalities shaped by their culture both positive and negative. Only bad thing, it ends on a cliffhanger and I wanted to keep reading.

Loved this book. It introduces a whole new world out there. People with special talents and two groups on the other side to one another., one wanting to protect this group and one to use them. Love the development of the relationships with the 4 main characters. The book ended too quickly, need the next one now!

I was completely drawn in by the first book in this new series by Mary E. Twomey, Savage Hearts. The main heroine Adelita is grieving the loss of her mother when she is attacked. Unable to defend herself, she is saved by three mysterious warriors. It's time for Adelita to learn who she is and how she can control her powers. I cannot wait to continue this series in book 2 to have some of the questions in book 1 answered.

This is the first book in a new series. Twomey has put together a great foundation for a female protagonist who is thrown into the hidden world around her. A chance encounter from her past has important, mysterious effect on her future. With the help of three men she takes the first steps toward that future.

This book was pretty exciting. The world is fascinating. The characters are deep and interesting. The romance part is definitely a slow burn since there wasn't much progress in this book specifically. I'm eager to get my hands on the next book as soon as possible.
