Beachbreak High #1

It Had to be Mason

Rate this book
Ask your brother’s best friend nicely, and he’ll teach you how to date. He might even teach you how to kiss…

Zoe Walsh is the most awkward girl in Beachbreak High. For years, she’s admired her crush from afar, but she’s NEVER talked to him. What would she even say? She doesn’t know the first thing about boys, or dating. The only thing she really knows is dancing.

Mason McClellan is the charming, all-star quarterback who gets all the girls. He’s also Zoe’s brother’s best friend. This year, he plans to take the hottest girl in school to Homecoming. But she refuses to be his date unless he can dance. Sadly, Mason has two left feet.

When Zoe approaches Mason for dating advice, he cuts her a deal: if she teaches him how to dance, he’ll teach her how to date. Lessons include how to get your crush to notice you, how to get asked on a date, and how to kiss.

The last thing they expect is to fall for each other. But as Homecoming draws near, Zoe wonders – if dating Mason is just practice, how come it feels so much like the real thing?

It Had to be Mason is the first book in the Beachbreak High YA sweet romance series. If you like adorable dates, laugh-out-loud moments, and all of the feels, you’ll love Emily Lowry’s sweet romances.

Such a sweet and wonderful teenager romance read!!!

Mason and Zoe were loveable and adorable characters, and their story was wonderful.

Although it was very well written and interesting, I just was not the appropriate target group for it, since I am not a teenager any more... 😉

sweet short story

This is most definitely a PG novel. YA, sweet, tame little book. I finished it in a day as it’s not very long.
If your after a “my brothers best friend” style read, then this is for you.

I’m usually not a fan of the brother’s best friend trope because it is almost always a forbidden romance which I hate. But thankfully that wasn’t the case with this book. Zoe’s brother, Tyler, and the hero Mason were super respectful of each other. They both wanted the best for Zoe and understood that it would be up to her who she ended up with, which I just loved.

I also really liked the whole dance competition at Homecoming. I’m from Montreal and we only get one prom in our last year of high school. But instead of crowning prom queen and king, we give a sash to the best girl and boy who can do the waltz. The school offers us one class to learn the waltz and we have to learn on our own and compete against everyone else in our grade. I was definitely getting deja vu when I read that😂

I have been having some trouble finding books I wanted to read and this book was the perfect book to get me through this slump. I wanted a quick and easy read before school started taking over my life again. I’m excited to get to next book in the series☺️

Wow! This is the 4th book that I have read by Emily! She has never disappointed me. I absolutely love a good, cute, feel good high school romance book. I love how Zoe and Mason realize how special they each are. Not only together but apart. I feel that Zoe in the end found out that she wasn’t just average she was something special. Mason now feels like he is the luckiest boy (man) in the world to not only be with Zoe but to find himself within her love. I am excited to read the next book in this series along with the excitement of the release of her next books! Thanks Emily for writing these lovely books!

If you enjoy sweet and cute teenage romance you will probably like this book. It was a quick read. I do wish there was more then just Mason and Zoe being in love, I mean obviously that’s what the overall book is about but maybe we could have heard more about Zoe and Tyler’s parents divorce? Just more details. But it was a good book and I will be checking out the other 2 books in this series.

Was able to read this a few days ago as part of the ARC group, Wow what a sweet High school romance novel (Brother’s BestFriend). Mason is Zoe’s older Brother’s bestfriend. Watching their love story unfold was so sweet. From knowing each other their whole childhood, to helping each other with their crushes, to eventually admitting they are in love 😍💕There is just something so nostalgic that these High-school YA stories bring! If you love sweet YA romances like me Give it a shot!

Sweet, clean YA read. Some of the language was off—calling grades marks didn’t feel Californian to me and Zoe kept saying Mason and I when it should have been Mason and me, but I tend to let things slide when it can be justified as the teenagers voice rather than the authors lack of grammatical knowledge.

4.5 🍭🍭🍭🍭 Spanish & English Opinion :: Loved it!

Español ::

Emily Lowry es una de mis autoras favoritas. Leí toda su serie “Rumors & Lies at Evermore High” y me hice fan.

English ::

Emily Lowry became one of my favorite authors. I read all the “Rumors & Lies” series and I became a fan. Every book has great characters, the stories are original but really cute and amazingly well written.

Mason is another great book boyfriend (like all the male characters Lowry writes). He’s thoughtful, considerate, and a great human being.

Zoe is fun, genuine and all her insecurities and questions about if she will be good enough at dating, kissing, etc are normal and every teen can relate at some point. But she deals in a very healthy way with this and that’s refreshing and important, so young people can notice that you can have nice relationships and not only push & pull along with suffering and drama.

Tyler, the brother, is super fun and I really liked that he’s not this macho I-go-out-with-every-girl-but-my-sister-cannot chauvinistic macho thing going on. It was great!

And my favorite part, when Mason explains that for kissing and dating, you have to be the best version of yourself and not pretend. It was beautifully explained and I just loved everything about the story.

Definitely, E. Lowry fan! ❤️❤️

This was a cute little read. I would say it’s perfect for preteens and teenagers. There wasn’t really much conflict or drama. Both characters were pleasant and always doing the right thing. The love interests liked each other pretty quickly and easily. And both started liking the other at the same time and the same way. Since it was dual point of view the fact that they started liking eachother the same way and at the same kind of timeline made it feel a little repetitive and not as interesting as it could have been. We listened to both of them monologue their feelings about falling for the other in similar ways at the same time so I would have liked things to be switched up a bit or thrown some curveballs or something. They didn’t have a ton of chemistry to me. Or, I should say the chemistry that they had felt more like just friendship for some reason. Maybe because it’s for a younger audience so it might be a little tricky to really show a romantic chemistry. Or maybe if there was some tension or a bigger conflict or something, that would have helped. Like if Kevin (the other guy) was actually competition for Mason it would have been more intense or made it so Mason had to fight harder to really win over Zoe or something? But anyways this is a great book for a young reader wanting a sweet, appropriate romance!

This book was so short so I loved that, but everything felt rushed. Like yes it’s short so I’m not expecting much but like it just seemed liked Mason and Zoe liked each other within their first time hanging out. Like there wasn’t much of a build up

Maybe I just read this book while I was tired so I didn’t fully process stuff but yeah

Also Kevin seemed to do a whole 180 degree shift. Like he seems boring yes, but then he becomes a jerk, like based on his character description and interactions he didn’t seem like a mean guy, just boring

Hmmmmm what else

Idk it wasn’t that bad and it was kindle unlimited so I’m not trying to complain. Again, another short and easy romance to read

I’m already having to add in an edit oops: this was supposed to be a brothers best friend trope, and yes it was but like, usually there’s supposed to be tension and stuff and none of that existed 😪 I just had different expectations for the trope but the reviews seem to like it so I think that’s just me

A note for myself: I technically started this the night of June 02, but like it was a bit past midnight so it says June 03, and then I couldn’t finish it June 03 because my friends woke up and then when they left, so did I, and then didn’t get home until 1 am😭

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Romance: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Writing: ✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️

This story follows Mason and Zoe. Mason is the all-star quarterback who gets every girl he wants. But now he has a challenge. The captain of the dance team wants someone who can dance as her date to the homecoming dance. Zoe is socially awkward but smart. She always looks from afar but now she wants to become friends with her crush. Sadly, she is socially awkward and would probably botch it all up. That’s where Mason comes in. Zoe decides that the best idea is to learn how to date from Mason. Zoe also learns dance luckily for Mason. The deal is that Zoe will teach Mason how to dance and Mason will teach Zoe how to date.

The story was exciting. You couldn’t predict what was happening. Both the characters were complete sweethearts and I would love to meet them. They both were a lot of fun to read about. I’m excited for the next book in the series. The story was devoid of mature scenes and bad language. I would certainly recommend this to romance lovers at any age.

I wrote this voluntary review in exchange for an ARC copy.

Sometimes you just need a good sweet romance and Emily Lowry does not disappoint. I read the 2nd book in this series a few months ago and decided to back track to the first, It had to be Mason.
Zoe and Mason are super cute together from their first interactions together at the beach you can tell that even though he is her brother's best friend that they have a strong friendship too. I love how they end up helping each other her with him dancing and him with his "school of dating". Mason is super sweet and cute with all of the things he does for Zoe.

The story is on the shorter side but that is expected with it being a young adult/teen romance. The editing was great which I always take note of, because the way I read, I read kind of slow and fully emerge into a story in my minds eye.

I do wish there was a little bit more of angst feelings between Mason and Zoe...we don't get much until the end. However, it is kind of refreshing to have less angst and more sweet.

I really enjoyed reading Mason and Zoe's story and thats why I gave it 5 stars.

It was first the title of the book that intrigued me and then the summary made me want to read it.

The main theme is regularly used in books (the brother's best friend) but for the moment, I don't feel tired because I don't read them often.

The characters are fun to follow. I have a preference for Zoe because I find her character a little more in-depth than Mason.

The story is beautiful, without headach, reads easily and has done me a lot of good in this troubled period.

I plan to follow this series because I want to know more about some characters that I have noticed.

Emily Lowry also wrote "Rumors and Lies at Evermore High Series".

32 year old woman here 🙋‍♀️
I love reading such a mixture of fiction and I’m not ashamed to say that includes YA books based in high school setting.
Having just read a heavy dark bully story I was looking for something light and entertaining and ‘It had to be Mason’ did not disappoint. In fact I’m sooo incredibly happy to have read this sweet love story. How could you not fall in love with the characters, especially the super swoony Mason 😍 seriously where we’re these boys in my high school?!

I have no complaints with regards to the writing, characters or story. I read the bonus chapters by signing up to Emily’s newsletter - I only would say that I would love to know somehow that these two made it and I can see someone else said the same in their review. Especially after the the paragraph of the bonus chapters - I want to know if it happened!! Maybe that’s my age 😂

“A recording of Mason’s voice filled the treehouse. “What? How long does it record? Only fifteen seconds? Wait it started — oh no — Zoo! I picked this little guy up for you as a congrats for getting your first date. And a thank you for everything, I—”
Emily Lowry, It Had to be Mason

The book was written from two different perspectives. This was amazing, because you got to know the point of view from both the main characters, but the thing that I didn't always like about it was that I thought that the story could maybe be better if it was written from the other perspectives.

What I really did like was the fact that there wasn't any drama with the brother about the relationship. This made the story a little bit less of a cliché.

I loved the book overall!

Love,

Teen stuff. This is just one of those girl-fall-for-brother-bestfriend kind of stories that make u wonder why u bother reading but u read through anyway. Its a kind of book that u wont be proud getting caught reading but heck u still wanna read nonetheless.

Its a kind of book i like when im laden and bored with d heavy stuff. Whenever i wanna take a break from life's drama, I grab a chicklit. Its like a breather to me.

I dont particularly like this book but i like how relaxed i was while reading it. Its uncomplicated, and light, and short... and well, couldvebeen sweet and swoony if it wasnt so cliche...but it wasnt boring, only predictable. Anyhow, its just what i need to carry me to a long sweet sleep on a friday night. G'nyt😘

10 tons of sugar!

So super duper sweet, I'm pretty sure I died.

Mason. Oh lawd. I wanted to wrap him in a blanket and bring that sweet guy home. Then I remembered one, he's much too young for me and then there's that whole he's in a book and not real thing.

The unfolding relationship between Zoo and Space Face was made of the sweetest of sweet moments wrapped in sweet, with more sweet drizzled on top.

There's a lot of dancing and laughing and identifying important and big feelings for these two. They navigated those new waters smoothly until everything worked itself out. I was hoping for a 10, 15 year future peek at them but it ended with a HFN feeling quickly after they got together.

So I’m always a sucker for a brother’s best friend trope and the love apprentice trope. Combine the two together (as has been successfully done by a few different authors) and I will probably love it. That being said, this series is staged at a CA beach highschool. The setting is so much fun and reminds me of all the best parts of growing up. I was the awkward one who looked on from afar, so I totally felt that vibe.

I never ended up with a Mason, but I sure as heck would have wanted to. I loved how he was painted as this dreamy guy, although I did get a little impatient with him. Their relationship was perfect and the growth of their story was so cute. I especially found the author’s realism hilarious. Overall, this book is 4.5 stars for me.

Mason and Zoe are an unlikely pair, the extroverted quarterback who pretends to be a dumb jock and the shy introverted girl who sees herself as awkward and plain, despite being a graceful dancer. Since he’s her brother’s best friend, they have been thrown together for years, never really taking the time to see each other. When they make a plan to help each other out, things change.
This story is so cute filled with moments that could only be found in a book, but yet still bring out the starry eyed daydreaming teenager in readers of any age.

Like every book from Emily I was hooked from the first page. Zoe wants to learn how to date so she can go a date with a boy she's interested in. Zoe turns to popular all star quarterback and her brother best friend Mason. Mason agress to help her learn how to date. If she'll learn him how to Dance in order to get a date to homecoming with the captain of the dance team. Will they both realise that while they were both looking for love they were both looking for it with the wrong person.

I honestly LOVED this book, but man did I get frustrated at the characters in the middle of the story! I'm not going to spoil anything, but you'll know what I mean by this after you read the book. I would definitely suggest this book if you like the slow-burn friends to lovers trope. I adore stories with men written by women in them, and this is a perfect example of that. Mason is such a sweet guy that you may get a fictional crush by reading this. I rarely rate books a full 5 stars, so that just shows how much I enjoyed reading this!

I love this author's books and this one definitely lived up to all her other ones. It had your sweet and cliché romance and was totally clean and adorable. The characters were awesome and relatable as teenagers and had great dialogue that was hilarious. I liked how the characters seed to grow throughout the story and it was so easy to fall in love with them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a hilarious YA romance with great characters and dialogue.

Ok, I guess?

Nothing bad about it, just not very good. Characters were cute. It was predictable, but with this kind of book you expect it to be. The transition from friends to liking each other was expected but also weirdly sudden. It didn’t really build. I did like that the brother was a decent person. So often in stories like this the brother is an awful sexist windbag who you want to punch.

Super Cute!

Zoe and Mason are friends turned high school sweethearts in this cute read! For a brute high school quarterback, Mason is a huge teddy bear with an even bigger heart which was refreshing when paired with a character like Zoe who lacks confidence when it comes to boys. The characters were relatable and overall the story was well written. I’d definitely read more by this author.

Easy read

This was a very light story. It lacked any kind of depth or originality. The story has been recycled so many times, but that's probably because it is an entertaining story. The only real problem with the book is it felt incredibly rushed. Every chapter is barely more than a couple pages and it ends out of nowhere. If the author had taken the time to flesh out the book some it would have been better.
