What the heck did I just read. My thoughts are all
Over the place, I can’t write a narrative paragraph, I just have to bullet all of my thoughts while reading this:

-What the hell?
- I think I just read 4 story lines at the same time
- I have no idea what I just read or what is going on
- Sooooo many toxic relationships in there
-soooooo many annoying heifers, male and female
- I know it has something to do with fairy tales, but what does any of that have to do with fairy tales???
- why is everyone so hot and cold with each other?
- why do you keep forgiving him so easily!?
- Why is everyone so obsessed and infatuated with Jane/Janie!? Does she have a magic vagina!? She’s absolutely looney.
- I’m with you Kylie, I don’t like Janie either, but you’re not much better either
- what ever happened to Kylie’s stepmother/sister? Are they going to be punished for abusing Kylie!?

I feel like I need to read the next book to figure out what is going on, but I really don’t want to go through that again.

This book is violently sexist. I remember reading this on Wattpad years ago and enjoying it so when the published version came up in my recommended I decided to give it a go. Luckily young adult me is a lot more socially aware than young teenage me, the way the female characters are treated in this book (with the exception of Janie of course) is awful. Every girl including the minor female characters of the girlfriends are treated as disposable characters with their only feature being that they are capable of extreme jealousy towards one person - you guessed it Janie. The way the female MC’s trauma was handled was not it in the beautiful poetic way this book dresses it as. It was handled awfully, if you’re going to ah die subjects as sensitive as the ones in this book you have to do them justice and not just use them as a plot point to further attempt to enamour your readers with a single character.

This book follows the gods and monsters trilogy which I have also given a go but did not enjoy because of the way it handles female characters. It’s more than fine having a female protagonist that’s not a stereotyped hero. But I would recommend the author considers editing the way she writes women in her books because so far I am severely unimpressed.

uhmmmmmm so i started off seriously loving this book. it had a lot of things i really enjoyed, like the main guy actively pursuing the main girl and some fake dating action with a fairly speedy resolution……..

but as i kept reading, there were some things i really, really couldn’t stand. like for one, it’s painfully clear to me now that not only do i just hate the name ryder, i also vehemently hate every character i’ve ever read named ryder. the whole thing with janie, logan and the godsons made me super uncomfortable and i really, really felt for the mc and her insecurities with their weirdly entangled relationships.

i think the thing i might have hated the most tho is this author’s annoying thing with naming prominent characters in her books…after herself. that’s some weird ass y/n type shit i don’t fuck with and i really can’t explain just how much i hate it 👀

my overall thoughts? i think janie marie has really interesting concepts with absolutely gorgeous cover art, but her execution is always so disappointing. the stories get really convoluted, making it hard to keep up. as i read in someone else’s review of this book: i know it’s about fairytales, but what the hell does any of this actually have to do with fairytales? can anyone tell me, bc i read this whole book and truly don’t have any idea.

"Who's afraid of the big bad wolf," by Janie Marie is one of the few books I have read that is an overall page-turner. To go into detail ~WITHOUT SPOILERS~ The author is simply getting better every book and this must be one of my favorites. The attention to detail and character-building really set up this magical yet mysterious world that draws you in. In the best way possible, the characters are the most realistic I have read because of how they develop throughout the chapters. The book really hones in on giving imperfect characters yet developing them slowly and gradually throughout. With this being said I believe this is what truly makes the story unique(besides it already being out there with its take on fairy tales) and really adds to the special effect the author has. This pace allows you to individually either love or hate every character while enjoying the amazing world the author builds around it. I will say this story is one of a kind and I suggest having an open mind while reading. This is one of those books where reality will hit you and throw you around like a rag doll. It will get intense as the world draws you in but personally, it is the best part. The book in this sense with these mature and graphic themes allows you to be one with the story but one with yourself. In most YA books, I tend to see many authors stray away from this type of storytelling as it may be hard to convey these messages or even write them properly without it sounding distasteful or disrespectful. I can ensure you that this book handles and deals with these subjects with taste and respect. It is done in the most profound way that this book is truly becoming a favorite of mine. Logan and Kylie ( two main characters) are so well written and full of life. They are the highlight of this book and the interactions and steamy scenes are done so well. Without spoiling, I highly recommend this book and personally all other books Janie has released. Such a talented author with a way of words I can ensure you will fall in love with this book the way I have.

So addictive!

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? is a YA bildungsroman (coming of age) novel about an abused and isolated seventeen-year-old girl, Kylie Hood, as she falls in love for the first time.

From the moment they first meet, Kylie and Logan's connection is palpable, addictive, and it had me wanting to read more. I couldn't put it down. I'm neither a fan or a hater of the fake romance trope, but I thought it worked really well in this novel, especially because there were a few twists along the way that made it different to any other fake romance I've read in the past. I also love how Kylie and Logan both make mistakes, but I ended up rooting for them anyway - they're messed up, but despite that I loved following their journey, and I'm so keen to see where it goes in the next book!

I also loved how the fairy tales were incorporated into the book. It's a spin-off series from Marie's first trilogy, Gods & Monsters (I highly recommend these books too btw!), but draws from fairy tales like Cinderella and Red Riding Hood (its namesake). I love fairy tales and I love seeing them adapted to fit today's world, and I felt like the ties between fairy tales and this book were really well done. It was never pervasive or cliché, and I really appreciated that subtlety.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader interested in YA, fairy tales and fairy tale adaptations, romance (particularly the fake romance trope), and bildungsroman (coming of age). Also, if fantasy, apocalypse lit., and/or mythology is your thing, I would recommend reading the Gods & Monsters trilogy first - they're right up your alley, and you'll avoid spoilers if you read them first.

Confusing and intriguing
Kylie Hood is a quiet girl, who is trying to be invisible at school, but when circumstances bring Logan Grimm into her life, it’s turned upside down. “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” is an interesting, intense, and confusing tale that I had a hard time understanding what was going on. Your mind keeps asking the question, “Why?”, but I could not put it down. It felt like going to the movie 20 min late. I felt like I was trying to play catch-up. This tale has mean girls, abusive family situations, violence, drama, action. I hope that book 2, “Little Hood and Her Wolf”, answers the questions that developed while reading this tale.

Please save your time

This was the dumbest waste of time, the worst book I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a lot. I have never written a bad book review in my life. It’s just something about being entitled about an authors work. I’m also a firm believer of people having different preferences. Perhaps something I find unenjoyable can make someone’s day. Who am I to critique? And just because I find something that isn’t my cup of tea, doesn’t make it a bad book.

This is a bad book. And a bad series.

Sorry not sorry.

Crappy, unlikeable, psycho (not in the cool way), cringey beyond belief, plot holes everywhere (what even is the plot again?) and like character development who?

Kylie was every pick me, victimized, anti-women, misogynistic brat. Ryder was probably most likable surprisingly and SUCKED. So much slut shaming. And using rape to further a garbage plot. Like this is the toxic Wattpad garbage I would inhale when I was thirteen and then learned what a good book was.

ALSO IT TOOK TWO BOOKS TO GET TO THE POINT. TWO BOOKS. USLESS DRAMA. USELESS EVERYTHING.

Don’t even get me started on the train wreck that was the male lead. I don’t even remember his name.

So do yourself a favor and please don’t waste your time.

Logan is pile of shit... A shitload of diarrhea!

“Do you need help?”
Logan slowly turned his head and peered over his shoulder, narrowing his dark eyes at the pretty brunette wearing only a large T-shirt.
She toyed with the hem of her shirt. “Maybe I can make you breakfast, or get you some aspirin?”
Logan didn’t respond right away. His grip tightened on the edge of the counter when she tried to step closer. “Who the fuck said you could still be here in the morning?” He glared at her as he stood to his full height.
“I-I—“ she stuttered and stepped back. “I didn’t know I couldn’t stay.”
“Get out of my fucking apartment,” he shouted, slapping the counter. The loud sound echoed and the girl shrieked, running from the kitchen. Logan grabbed his pounding head as he listened to her crying until the front door slammed shut.
“Dumb bitch.” He shook his head and put the still usable breakfast items back in the refrigerator, grabbing a water bottle in the process and retrieving a bottle of aspirin.

This is how the "hero" speaks to the women he fucks.

Didn’t like this book. Didn’t really feel the relationship between the MC & the Hero. Don’t know how many times the Hero compared the MC to his ex. Even called his ex “baby doll” while calling the MC “ Hoods” which was just her last name. Hero would probably choose his ex if it came down to his ex & the MC that he kept telling that he cared about her. I couldn’t even count the many times that Hero would call his ex “his world” while being in a relationship with the MC. He would even get sad/mad that MC didn’t want to have a friendship/relationship with the ex. Was pretty proud of the MC for holding that decision after seeing the Hero look at his ex lovingly and tenderly while being in a RELATIONSHIP. Yet was disappointed with MC when she would forgive him after the Hero would say that it’s her he chose to be with. Even came to the point where the MC was happy that she had a physical relationship with the Hero since the Hero didn’t have one with his ex.

My first book from Janie and not going to lie that cover had me all kinds of curious.

Kylie and Logan have a story that took me some time to get into but so glad I stuck around because this was so intense. I liked getting to know the entire cast of characters. I received an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.

I hate it’s a trilogy and I now have to wait for the next book. BUT I freaking loved it! So my review might only make sense to people who have read Janie Marie’s other books Gods and Monsters set and Jane’s Team. So yeah read those awesome works of art too if you haven’t. So at first I was confused like I was reading something I should have read after something else. Then I thought it was another view from Jane’s Team. Then I remembered Jane, Ryder and multiple dimensions. It has lots of similarities to Jane’s Team but not. It’s also a first that I wasn’t a Jane and Ryder fan because Kylie, the main chick this time is, made me very Kylie’s team. Kylie has only been living in Blackwood for almost two years. She’s a loner and has a messed up home life. She meets Logan thanks to his cousin Trevor. Her crush goes from Trevor to Logan very quickly and they click. Janie is Ryder’s girlfriend (duh haha) and Logan’s ex. Janie is a very sore subject for Kylie because she didn’t know about Janie and Logan’s past. She also feels like an after thought when it comes to Logan and Janie. So Kylie, who trust no one really, finds out truths from everyone but Logan and it makes things hard for them. He finally has eyes for someone other than Janie and Kylie finally has a protector. There are lots of secrets and things Kylie doesn’t know about Blackwood and it’s residents. I can’t wait for the next book!

WAOTBBW is not a book for the faint of heart. A young adult (and by young adult I mean 17+ [based on rated MA movies being 17+], this is not a book for kids ya'll) is going to reading this completely differently from an adult. There is (or mentions of) violence, sex, regret, sexual violence, etc. This is certainly a book that you WILL have an opinion on. Kylie and Janie are two of the most divisive characters ever. The same goes for Logan and Ryder. If you read this book with friends, you may just end a few friendships. Janie Marie is an exceptional character writer; her characters have immense dimension and intensity. They lived and breathed. You are brought into their emotions and experiences, which gives that immersive experience that many readers look for in a good book. If you are looking for well-balanced world-building and character development, try her Gods & Monsters Trilogy. She puts all of her love into her characters and it works for this story. If you value well written characters that you feel like you could put on your wall, this is the author for you. Overall, I think this book is a great read and will be enjoyed by a wide variety of people. Yes, you can absolutely read it stand alone. However, you will want to read the other books after you finish.

I love and hate this book there are so many bad guys in this twisted Fairy Tale its the kind of read you can't put down everything and everybody suck and poor Kylie is in the middle of a and f5 Hurricane called Janie the kind that distroys everything and shes just that kind of girl and no matter what she's been threw she bugs me theres something off about her like she would smile at you then literally stab you in the back and laugh about. Were as Kylie Hood is the shy girl with awful secrets and know one cares or sees and there something strange about here at the same time maybe theres more to Kylie then the author is letting on one things for sure there are no Fairy Godmother's and the White Knights they suck too. And Logan Grimm is major trouble its like Kylie traded one set of tormentors for a new danger hes the typical bad boy who is supposed to be all better because of the girl but hes so messed up with his friendship and priorities that it would literally take a mind swip to fix him and poor Kylie i really want to see this girl suprise everyone and save herself and all those haters and fakers get theres cant wait for book 2.

I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

I’m in my wattpad era again… and I have regrets. I remember reading this back in high school, anxiously and excitedly waiting for the updates. I loved this book, it was one of my favourites and now I can say, it’s not. The amount of sexist sh*t in this book is insane, almost as insane as making every single character so unlikeable that I wanted to gouge out my eyeballs, bc god gave me eyes and I abused them fr fr. I enjoyed the alternate reality thing the author has done with fairytales, but right now… I don’t see it being done justice like I remembered? Maybe I have high expectations with Grimm Fairytales etc, bc of Soman Chainani and his books. Will I read the second one? I am right now, I need to know how it ends.

it was intriguing for sure.. but i couldn’t get into it. I think it was the dialogue and personality’s between the characters. I felt lost and confused at times. it mentions a trilogy before this new spinoff. What i struggle with most is how the main anti-hero likes the main protagonist but yet alway makes her feel second and puts janie his best friend first. Janie who happens to be his ex girlfriend. For me that was a big no-no. I know theres probably more to the story.. but i just couldn’t. It was a weird dynamic.

Let's start off with trigger warnings okay, there's mention of rape, self harm and assault in here so this is definitely for older teens.
The cliffhanger ending and the next book isn't out until December ahhh

If you like sexy smug boys this is great for you, there's some dark fairy tales here and while I haven't finished the G&M trilogy it's recommended you read it first. The characters can be a little frustrating and depending which trilogy you read first will determine if you like Kylie or Janie more. Honestly both can be a little frustrating but it makes them so much more believable and show their growth.

Kylie and Logan are quite the pair. As a huge fan of Jane’s Team, it’s amazing to take a look at the world from a different perspective. I loved seeing Kylie grow out of her shell and become stronger and look forward to where this story is headed. The tales surrounding the Knights, Godsons, Wolves, and Grimms are going to be very interesting as they intersect and are woven into this tale. Janie Marie has captured me once again!

What a book! Janie has one of those rare talents. You get sucked into the book from the first page and you don't want to stop until you've read the very last page!

I love the world building and the relationships between the characters. Then there's also some mystery that leaves you with tones of question and wild guesses.

It's different and refreshing and an amazing read.

Makes me wish that I lived inside the book with all those hunky men!

I liked the tension that the author created in this story. It made the book interesting and exciting to read. The characters had a good presence on the page making them feel a bit larger than life. I thought this was a good story that clearly defined the characters as they navigate life’s struggles. I felt for her character as details of her life emerged.

I was sucked in from the beginning of this story even though I hadn't read the previous series from where this stems from. The characters are likable and have depth. They're not one-dimensional and the story has mystery and suspense and darkness that called to me at that moment. I just hate that I have to wait for the next book because now I am hooked.

Wow, I was really surprised by this story.

I’ll be honest the cover is what made me read this story, I have never read a Janie Marie books before but I’m gonna check out her other books.

I was really sucked into this story, the world and these characters were well written and had me falling for them.

I am looking forward to the next book.

I read this book on wattpad and I enjoyed it, tried to read it again… I can tell I liked because I was 13 and didn’t know about the good stuff yet. I don’t like how the author has to put herself at the center of the books. The main character was there to be a punching bag and i dislike that. DV and SA is just thrown around so easily, I DNF. It’s a hard no from me and trying to read the other books before I tried to read this one didn’t help me because I was still confused.

I suspect at least part of my problem with this book is that I didn't read G&M, but there's still a lot here that I am not a fan of. I first read this on Wattpad many years ago and I did not get a chance to finish it there so I thought I would read the published version. I regret that decision.

So the story starts with Kylie, the fmc (technically), being introduced. We are told very early on that she is an abuse victim. She suffers daily brutal physical abuse from her stepmother and stepsister and her stepfather seems either oblivious or indifferent to the whole thing. Anyway she has this crush on the popular boy at school, but she ends up in a relationship with his cousin Logan who is the other mc. Just to be clear Kylie is 17 at the start of this book and Logan is 21. There is much of this book that is him teasing her about sex and them waiting for her to turn 18 and yeah......

I think the part of this book that irks me the most is how it seems like the author doesn't even like her own female lead. Once Janie, Logan's ex-gf, enters the story it is crazy how quickly Kylie becomes unlikeable. I don't think Kylie's reaction is completely unreasonable though, from the moment Janie is introduced we are told that she is Logan's priority by everyone including Janie's current boyfriend, Logan, Logan's father and brother, and many more people. It's crazy how many characters in the story tell Kylie that she is an awful, selfish person at this point. But I would like to remind you that Kylie is an orphaned 17 year old girl with no friends and an abusive home life and Logan is literally the first person to be nice to her, or at least try to defend her.

I think the part of the story where I just started disconnecting was when Ryder (Janie's bf) starts telling Kylie that he looked her up and that she abused her stepsister first, and that her stepmother was actually trying to be nice and give her the chance to leave and whatever else. Basically this scene is about really hammering home that Kylie (17 year old orphan again, just so we're all on the same page) is a truly evil and selfish person. I was pretty done at that point. It just feels like it came out of left field.

Someone said in another review that this book is also very sexist. I concur it is indeed very sexist. It is also not about Kylie or Logan really, they are at best narrative tools. I said at the beginning of the review that I didn't read G&M. This made me sympathize a bit more with Kylie because I was very confused by whatever the hell was going on and she similarly did not know what was going on.

People obviously like this book for some reason, so I guess my biggest advice is not to go in without reading G&M because this is very much not a standalone series- you will be deeply confused, you will not like the main character and yet have only a tenuous connection to the character you are actually supposed to like, and you will have to read through so many descriptions of rape, abuse, and sexual assault of women handled in a way that is just deeply deeply upsetting.

If you read this book let me know what you think, I'm not a huge fan of downrating books, so I think I would like to know if other people felt similarly or if you enjoyed it I would like to know why.

“Grab some tissues, some snacks and get comfy my friends.

Alright so this book is not going to be easy to get through. You’re going to laugh, cry, scream and want to give up on it a few times but I PROMISE you it is worth it. Our Captain Queen Janie here has a way of making these worlds that are so captivating and gut wrenching all at the same time. I first read this book on Wattpad when I was going through some of the hardest times of my life.

This book.. if you let it will change your life. These characters and the hidden messages within the story will make you feel all of the feelings. If you’re anything like me you won’t want to put it down until you finish it.

One piece of advice I have for new readers is to keep an open mind while reading this book. It is not your modern fairytale love story, it is so much more than that. Give it the chance to sweep you off your feet and knock you on your butt. You’ll thank me in the end.”

That was my first review of this book before it was updated and revamped now into a trilogy. Where do I even begin to explain this story? At this current point in time I’ve had the honour to have read every version, every special moment of this book. This world is magical in so many different ways.

You’ll love it, hate it and probably curse me out later for telling you, you need to read it. Just like in my original review I said it will make you laugh, cry and scream. It will make you fall in love with bad boys, broken girls and even the villain for a little bit but trust me it’s all worth it. Step into the world, let it take you away and then trust me. You’ll thank me in the end but I do have to warn you.

This is not a children’s book, this is not a book for the faint of heart. It does contain mentions of graphic violence, abuse and sexual assault along with mentions of suicidal thoughts. If any of those mentioned topics are something you wish to avoid reading, I do suggest turning away. Although they’re mentioned in tasteful manner, triggering topics may come up.

For those of you who are willing to read despite the graphic, maturity of the novel, my biggest piece of advice is to keep an open mind. You’re going to hate some of the characters for awhile, you’re going to wish a friendship could blossom with others. You are going to feel everything you could humanly feel while reading a book. Waotbbw can be read as a stand-alone series or you can read it before/ after reading the Gods and Monsters trilogy. They blend together in a beautiful way that once you notice the little details will make you giddy.

I hope you give this book a chance to show you the beauty in a tragic story, and if you do enjoy it. Welcome to the family~

How can I express how much nostalgia reading this made me experience? I read this originally on Wattpad while it was being actively updated and I happened to stumble across it on Kindle Unlimited when having a look back at books I had read during my Wattpad years. I loved it back then, was one of my Wattpad favs, and left an impression on me to the point I would still think about it years later (enough to want to read it again).

Upon re-reading, I definitely enjoyed reading and I will read the rest of the series. I reckon some of my enjoyment is fuelled exclusively by nostalgia from how much I loved this book when I was younger rather than the quality of the narrative.

There are many things that don’t sit right with me about this book:
- the relationships are undoubtedly toxic (but honestly I could excuse that in favour of a good story line and character development if it weren’t for the following issues)
- is the main character Janie or Kylie? I think there might be too much focus on Janie for a story whereby the main character is Kylie and Logan. It also feels too much like a grandiose author insert - very Y/N which I suppose is fitting considering the origins of the book.
- with the hindsight of being probably ten years older than when I first read this book, some of the characters feel juvenile in the way they try so hard to be edgy and badass.
- I didn’t like how everyone apart from Logan (particularly Ryder) is hyper aware of Jamie’s trauma but Kylie’s trauma, and whenever she acts in a certain way due to it, is disregarded. Why is a 17 year girl who is regularly beaten and who has lost her family expected to immediately ignore that? Why is she expected to be okay with the strange entangled relationships? I don’t blame her for feeling insecure when her boyfriend is so connected to his Ex and everyone constantly reminds her of that
- Women are treated like disposable characters and lots of the male characters are misogynistic in the way they talk, act, and think towards women.

I first read this story I don’t know how many years ago and I have to say it’s come a long way. Getting better every time I read it and I notice more and more little hidden details with every reread.

A young adult story about a girl dealing with abuse and finding her way in her first ever relationship in a town that’s shrouded in the fairytales of ages.

Kylie and Logan are real, as in they make mistakes and they argue and they learn. They had chemistry from the start. I never felt like I was reading about an unrealistic relationship or an unrealistic story and that’s part of what sets this book apart for me.
The other thing is the fairytales. This book is linked to Janie Marie’s first trilogy called Gods & Monsters. Without spoiling any of that and exactly how, this book deals with that story in a way of fairytales. It’s a legend and a story that some people believe in and others don’t. Other than that, there are elements from the fairytales you know and love peppered throughout this book as well. The more notable ones being Cinderella and as you may have guessed, little red riding hood. It’s a unique way of creating a story and I love it!

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf is messy story in all the good ways. You will not know up from down, you will feel every emotion on the face of the earth and come away feeling like you ran a marathon or ten. But it’s a story worthy of knowing and one that needed telling.

This is book one in this trilogy and ends in a cliffhanger. I also highly recommend reading God’s and Monsters first if you can, it does really enhance this story!

When I first saw the cover, I immediately thought of Little Red Riding Hood. The title also contributed. I applaud the illustrator because the cover is so gorgeous and represents Kylie perfectly.

I haven't read the Gods & Monsters Trilogy because I just discover the author. Thoses who have read the Trilogy will more easily understand certain things but for me, it is not important because I am at the same level as Kylie and discover everything like her.

The universe looks like ours at first glance except that I quickly noticed some things after the first third.

I have a hard time with some characters even though I love following Logan and Kylie. I was still a little shocked that Kylie dared to say stop only after starting to hang out with Logan. Not having his character, I will be gone a long time ago or I will have replied in one way or another.

Although we find ourselves in a dark universe with difficult times, I had a hard time stopping reading to sleep (5 a.m. ). I thought about this book until I finished it and even after because the end comes a little abruptly. I was not prepared.

I will read the next book because I want to know more. Highly December.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
