Before The Fall #1

Interrupting Starlight

Rate this book
The human composed a song in his heart, a pull he couldn’t ignore, a draw that demanded further exploration—

When he answered a distress call, L’Den hadn’t expected to find one of the Invaders waiting for him. The tug he feels on his soul is even more surprising, drawing him closer to the woman, in spite of her humanity. Both his second-in-command and A'rch, his companion mogha, seem fine with leaving her behind and letting the desert deal with the problem, but he’s not so sure.

Tessa has spent the last two years hoping for a way off the harsh desert planet where her research vessel crashed, watching her friends die one-by-one, and befriending a strange creature of the sand. But when a rescue ship does arrive, she realizes she might have been better off lost. The Korthans, savage aliens bent on the destruction of humankind, aren’t happy to find her. And yet, despite her fear, she can’t deny the pull she feels towards one of them.

Korthans only have one chance to find a true mate, but chasing after the human could risk the safety of the colony he’s sworn to protect. Even though the call of a mating bond demands a higher loyalty, L’Den never expected to have to choose.

MY RATING GUIDE: 1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I ENJOYED IT; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I rarely give 5 Stars).

3.5 Stars (nearly 4) for INTERRUPTING STARLIGHT a novella in the Pets in Space, #4 anthology by Kyndra Hatch. I enjoyed INTERRUPTING STARLIGHT. It is difficult to fit a full story with 3 dimensional characters into a short novella yet I felt this was accomplished.

KCC Commander Protector L’Den/MMC, a Korthan Cyborg Corp officer, answers a distress call to a nameless harsh desert planet, the most uninhabitable world in Korthan space. Upon arrival, L’Den and his co-pilot discover a stranded single female Invader/a human named Tessa Mathews/FMC, who after 2 long years appears to be the sole survivor of a 9 person crew from a crashed Earth research vessel. Since L’Den’s intelligent mogha companion’s entire race had been destroyed following the Earthlings arrival and colonization of his home planet, A’rch strongly suggests they kill the woman and be done with her. He’d be very happy to devour her after what her race had done to his. But L’Den senses a sudden and unexpected pull from this particular weakened human and posits another alternative. As Commander Protector, his choice may now put his career and his people at risk. And then Tessa discovers everything she once believed is a lie.

I read INTERRUPTING STARLIGHT through the Pets in Space, #3 anthology but it is also available for purchase as a standalone title. The Pets in Space anthologies are a good means to discover new-to-me authors in the Space Opera genre while also supporting a good cause. I hadn’t previously read anything by Kyndra but I do plan to check out her other titles, apparently another connects to the story INTERRUPTING STARLIGHT.

Stranded on a desolate planet for 2 years after the crash of her survey ship, lone survivor Tessa has all but given up hope of rescue by the Human Colony Alliance when she’s surprised by the arrival of a Korthan ship responding to a distress signal.

L’Den, Cyborg Korthan is even more surprised by his immediate attraction to Tessa. His companion a Moga/Hellhound, A’rch wants the hated human killed because she is the enemy, and humans, Korthans are at war.

This was an excellent story, though short. A sweet slow burn romance especially on Tessa’s part but she has her reasons for resisting the bond with L’Den.
The Korthan culture is pretty interesting as are the interactions between L’Den and his Moga.
There is plenty of intrigue and lite action and Tessa’s little pal Squeak was cute.

Although the ending left me feeling bereft as it was kind of abrupt, no HEA just an HFN. There has to be more story here?
The book is marketed as #1 so one can only hope things continue in Book #2 as I was interested enough to want more.

Loved the books concept and the fascinating universe the author has created.
This was my first time reading this author’s work and I really enjoyed the experience!
As an aside, I went and picked up the short story After the Fall written prior to Interrupting Starlight
but taking place after the events in Interrupting Starlight. Oh, my goodness it was an EXCELLENT inclusion in this series only with different characters.

Do yourself a favor and read both books. Highly recommended!
Keep them coming Ms. Hatch!!!!! Just a little longer In story, PLEASE.

Interrupting Starlight hooked me from the start and didn’t let me go until I read the last page. I thoroughly enjoyed this short, well-paced sci-fi romance.

Tessa is among a crew of eight scientists whose ship crashes on a harsh desert planet. They send out a distress beacon, but it takes two years before anyone responds, and by then, Tessa is the only one left alive.

But her rescuer isn’t human, but a Korthan, a member of the savage alien race that has been at war with the Human Alliance.

L’Den is shocked to find a human woman, an enemy, on an uninhabited planet in Korthan territory and considers leaving her there or killing her until he discovers she’s his mate.

He rescues her and takes her aboard his ship, and Tessa discovers that Human Alliance didn’t tell the truth about the Korthans.

I loved this story. Originally written for Pets in Space, it has some adorable pets, including an acquisitive space rat and telepathic alien dog. The world-building is fantastic, the characters are awesome, and the romance is believable.

Often novellas are “too short” to do everything the author wants to do and the story can end up feeling rushed, but that wasn’t the case here. Interrupting Starlight is well-paced, and the story develops naturally. The result is a one-sitting read that will transport you another world.

After finishing it, I immediately bought the next book in the series. Highly recommend!!

This story takes place in another Galaxy in a distant future. A group of humans have crashed their spaceship and have become stranded in Space. Lone survivor Tessa is rescued by none other than the aliens that her people are currently at war with. This is a romantic tale about finding love in the most unlikely of places. I really enjoyed reading Interrupting Starlight because It was easy to get into and held my interest straight away. It had an awesome storyline and I found myself wanting to continue reading as each chapter went by just to find out what was going to happen next. The content was well written and very descriptive, it really set the scene and made you feel like you were a part of the story. This enabled me to relate to all the characters and their feelings and emotions. It was very imaginative and despite the obvious fantasy involved it still had a very down to earth raw quality. I did find the characters names hard to get used to at first, however I feel they were very necessary to fit in with the storyline. I would have really enjoyed certain ideas and aspects of this book to be covered in more detail and explored in more depth. There were a few minor spelling mistakes but overall I really liked the story and would like to read other titles by this Author.

It was clearly the cover that made me want to know more but I confess that I expected a longer story.

The story takes place in another galaxy and in a distant future from us during a war between humans and aliens.

The universe created is coherent and the vessel very interesting. My scientific side is intrigued.

The characters are well worked and the beings who accompany them are amusing by their behavior.

I had a great time with this book and I'm already wondering what to expect next.

I like very much science fiction romance stories, especially those having to do with aliens and humans, so I bought this story as soon as I read the plot synopsis. It is good, but there are lots of grammar mistakes, which detract from the story itself. English is my second language, yet it wasn´t difficult to detect those mistakes, and I felt distracted trying to correct them. This work needs a good editing.

Short, Sweet, What a Treat!

This story hits on a lot of the story and character types I enjoy. Sci-fi? Check. Romance? Check. Cute Critter Shenanigans? Also Check. Characters I can grow into, love, hate? Check, check AND check. Kyndra Hatch could lay down a full series in this universe and I would pick it up straight away. Drew me in and kept me there. Had fun with it!

Interrupting Starlight

This is one amazing story of war and how no matter what race you are there is two sides to everything. Finding out that your other half is definitely not human can be downright scary but they say opposites attract. Beautiful storytelling that will take you out of this world!!!

Interesting story, well written but is very short

It ends nicely but is anti climatic and doesn’t give much of a ending for the pairing given the synopsis of the next book

Beauty in every word

I’ve read these books all the wrong way around yet it’s been easy to follow and most satisfying for the heart and the imagination. Kyndra Hatch is definitely an artist who draws beauty with words!

Really 2.5 stars rounded up lol

I don't think this book did a particularly good job with the fated mates stuff. Also I'm sorry but if I'm lost in space for 2 years with zero contact, I'm think I'm assuming my fiancé has moved on....

felt wrapped up in a hurry as well, but overall fine.
