I enjoyed Huntsman by Morgan Brice, even if I had some issues with the writing style.

I'm a huge sucker for a paranormal romance, so I was really excited to pick up Huntsman and give it a go. I've read this author a few times before, and I think she does a good job, but I think there is often not enough world building for my taste. Huntsman was no different.

We are sort of thrust into the action with the story, which can be exciting, but I felt like it relied too much on internal dialogue and telling vs showing to clue the reader into what was happening. I like a more well-developed world so the MC doesn't constantly have to reiterate things in his head. However, even with that I was intrigued by the storyline and into all the characters, even the side ones.

I thought there was some details that needed to be fleshed out, like the relationship between the shifters and non-shifter world and the way magic plays into everything. It was too vague and too glossed over. Still, I think I would read on in this series just to find out more about how the world is structured because I think this is the type of series that would get better over time.

Of course, as a shifter romance, I come to expect instalove, but I was hoping it would be a little more developed. It was very abrupt, and I'm hoping these two grow as a couple in subsequent books.

Overall, I think a *tentitive* good start to a series, even if it didn't wow me.

I'm not crazy about shifter books but I am diffidently crazy about Morgan Brice! I even liked these characters in their animal and human shapes enough to read more of this series. Liam and Russ are really great together. It was good to see them really trying to get to know each other rather than only relying on the "fated mate" part to make everything easy. The supporting characters are all very well done, with a lot of easy choices for "next couples". if you don't mind, or even like same sex couples... fated mates...mixed species...shifter towns...fighting to survive against the hunters...dealing with previous love lost...a feisty fox and a sweet alpha wolf...you might give this one a try, or for that matter any of the series by Morgan Brice. She writes the Badlands series and the Witchbane series under the name Morgan Brice, and a few others under the name of Gail Z. Martin. No matter which name she uses, she is one excellent storyteller with the most wonderful characters.

Huntsman
is the start of a new paranormal MM shifter series by Morgan Brice. A fated mates story between a fox shifter on the run from and hunter and a wolf shifter .

If you've been following my reviews for a while now you know I love love love Fox shifters. They are cunning, sneaky, feisty, small and just all around perfection in my opinion. Anyways I digress. This is a quick and easy read with insta love , if you read shifters on the regular than you know with fated mates this is a given. It takes place in a tight-knit community filled with people, shifters and other varieties of those in tune with the supernatural. If you're looking for more than a fluffy shifter romance this has a heavy dose of steamy intimate scenes and a touch of action.

Morgan Brice is a new author to me and overall I enjoyed the Huntsman, so I'll be keeping an eye out for future books in the Fox Hollow Zodiac series. I'm a sucker for a small town shifter romance with a HEA.

After reading and raving about Romp, I’m sad to say this one fell flat for me. The foundation was good with very likable main characters, equally likable side characters, great setting and solid plot concept but ultimately it failed in execution for me.

It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of insta love but if it’s done well, I can usually overlook my reservations. I knew going into this one, as a fated mates story, that insta love was possible and probable and honestly, fated mates stories are generally where I feel most comfortable and accepting the insta aspect. The problem I had with it in Huntsman was that there is basically no relationship building at all. The entire story up to the epilogue takes place over less than a full week and during that week, Liam and Russ spend very little time together, either on page or off. They recognize and accept their instant connection is likely a fated mate match right away and basically move straight to “I love you.” I wanted to see and spend time with them together. I wanted to know that they’re not just fated mates but that they’re a good match, that they get along, that they’re meant to be, apart from being fated. I was so disappointed that I didn’t get to see and feel it for myself.

Unfortunately the insta aspect and lack of relationship building wasn’t the only thing that stumbled for me. While I liked the plot concept and elements, to me it felt like there were plot holes and inconsistencies and plot points that were only vague in explanation. These elements had me squinting with skepticism. To me, it felt like the story needed tighter editing/fresh eyes/more critical input.

All that said, I did enjoy Huntsman and am looking forward to more of this series. I just hope that the story and relationship have greater depth or are more developed, more finely tuned. I want to feel it and believe in it, even if it is paranormal and suspension of disbelief is necessary.

Rating... um... 3 seems a little harsh but also a little generous... I’m going to leave this without a star rating for now.

If you have KU and are into shifters, fated mates, intrigue and low key suspense, it’s worth checking out.

Another new paranormal series from Morgan Brice, and one that hits all those good notes you expect from Brice. A little fluffier than her other books, but that definitely worked here since it was a small town fated mates story. I’m a sucker for towns with many different types of shifters and magical beings, so I hope this series allows us to see some of the other people from the town find they’re HEA. There was some tension and definitely some high stakes scenes that kept this from venturing into the too fluffy arena. I do wish there was a little more lead up to the I love yous, and I think that’s why I have to give my first 3 star rating to a Brice story. Still wonderful writing and love able characters, I just need a little build up or other tension to overcome in relationships (even if they are fated mates.)

So we have Liam who was such a sweetheart fox shifter who is on the run for his life. His friend contacted him letting him know that the Huntsman is on his way to kill him. It appears that his POS ex wants him dead. The Huntsman is not only a killer but kidnaps shifters selling them to disgusting wealthy people so they can hunt & kill them. Anyway, his prior professor had offered him a job in Fox Hollow and he calls him & accepts. The town is full of shifters, physics and all manner of magical beings and I loved them. There are also humans, some who know about shifters and some that do not. On his way to the town, his vehicle breaks down and Russ comes to his rescue. When he gets settled in, he is afraid to tell his friend and former professor about the Huntsman. Russ is still grieving over the loss of his husband who he loved deeply and lost to a horrific auto accident. Russ and Liam are true mates but Russ isn't ready to give in to his desires. I liked that they are given free will on giving into the pull and not immediately, mate, mine. Liam is afraid of putting Russ into the line of fire by either getting involved with him or telling him about the Huntsman. When Russ is injured responding to a fire, which turns out to be arson, they both realize they need each other. We have a story about these two trying to come to terms with the pull of the fated mates bond. I liked the fact that they can speak to their animals and their animals have a mind of their own and talk back. I love that Liam's fox is such a diva and he just cracks me up. I also love that we were given the indication that were are going to be seeing some of our favorite characters from Ms. Brice's other series. I love cross overs so very much. I can't wait for the next book in this series!!

The idea behind this book was good and the overall plot arc was interesting. And I love fated mates. But......there was no world building, no character development, no depth at all. It's too bad cuz it had the potential to be a really good book with some more detailed writing.

2nd time reading

I just got book two of this series so I had to reread the first! I love that it starts out right into the thick of things, with Liam running away from a killer. Then he goes to the Adirondacks, a place that sounds heavenly with short summers and plenty of snow. Can I move there please? Liam immediately connects with fellow shifter Russ and their animals let them know they're actually fated mates. The guys fall into a relationship quickly, but I liked their chemistry and they make a cute couple.

There's also plenty of action, with arson and kidnappings and near death experiences. I flew through this and now I'm psyched to read the sequel!

**********************************************

I really enjoyed this! I love shifter books with mates and Liam and Russ were adorable together. They fit together so well and they both needed someone to love them after what they've been through.

Liam is on the run after a hunter almost catches him at his apartment. His car breaks down on the way to his new town, but luckily the tow truck driver is sexy wolf shifter Russ. They have an immediate connection as both realize they're fated mates, made for each other. They try to take things slow, but have a difficult time resisting the pull. I thought they had great chemistry, lots of sweet moments and I was excited for them to get together.

The fires and hunter after Liam was interesting and added some nice drama to the story. I liked the different kinds of shifters in the town and thought it was cute when Liam as a fox spoke to the natural foxes.

I'm so excited for book two, hopefully it's Drew's book.

Huntsman: Fox Hollow Zodiac Book One
MMy Thoughts and Review:
I’ve never met a Morgan Brice book I didn’t like and this one is no different. What is different, however, is while reading I kept thinking to myself, how fun it will be to get to know all these fascinating shifters in this little community better. In the other two Brice Series, I’ve read there is this sort of floating cast that weaves its way through all the Brice/ Martin worlds. In this one, however, it seemed to have a different vibe of tribe or family, found families, and roots.

I adore a good series and Brice has a way of writing characters that I love. The MCs in Huntsman, Liam, a fox shifter, and Russ, a wolf shifter, both need the other and Fate seems to know this. The two know who and what they are to each other but decide to just roll with things. There’s no rush and no pressure and the two become friends, each enjoying the other’s company. That is until a string of suspected arson events and a couple of missing shifters makes Liam, who’s new to the Fox Hollow community, begin to suspect he didn’t outrun what or I guess I should say, “Who,” was hunting him.

This has all the makings of one great series. So, if you love shifters (no mpreg), and other paranormal beings, found families, blood families, enjoy humor, spicy and sweet roMMance, and an ending that makes you smile with happiness, snag this! You will love it.

Honestly a very good book. A funny thing about fox hollow is that pretty much every book can work as a stand alone in a way, so while this is the official first book, this is the fourth set in the town I've read.
I have said it in other reviews and I'll say it again. I really like the way Morgan handles the fated mates and avoiding the instalove, instajoy cliche. It's a pretty solid way of developing the story.

An excellent new series from Morgan Brice! She has definitely worked her way up to favorite authors list. The stories she is writing are really engaging and fun.

In this new series, we are dealing with shifters. Liam is a fox shifter who starts the book having to flee his home due to someone trying to kill him. Fortunately, he had gotten a job offer from a former professor just a few days prior, so he quickly calls to accept the job as he was driving out of town.

His professor is a psychic, and the job is in this awesome town called Fox Hollow. A majority of the residents are shifters if some kind, and it’s the first time Liam feels like he truly belongs. He also meets Russ, a tow truck driver/mechanic/firefighter. Right away both guys realize they found their mate even though both of them have baggage that made them not want a relationship. I did expect them to go a slight bit slower into the relationship, but they didn’t fight their attraction or ignore the mate piece. I did like that despite them moving quickly, the pasta weren’t ignored.

The characters had great chemistry, and the story was really interesting. Liam is one feisty fox and Russ was a total sweetheart wolf. I loved it. Im very much interested in what comes next. Maybe a book for Drew? I loved that there was a small reference to some characters from some of the other series. I’d love a crossover.

Loved this and can’t wait for more.

Huntsman by Morgan Brice is the first book in the Fox Hollow Zodiac series. This exciting and fun story provides a suspenseful, action, heat, comedy and a fated mate love story. These shifters are fun, sweet and steamy.... I love them. Give me more soon, please!.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this title and am reviewing voluntarily and honestly my own thoughts, opinion and reactions based on that copy.

This was ok, a little better than a "2 star = it was ok" read but still, just ok.

I am not a fan of chapter for chapter repetition, at all and that happened a bit.

I am a huge fan of instalove but even this came out of nowhere for me. I just didn't even understand the declaration.

I think I needed a little more setup too. Why was his ex such an evil guy? It really never made any sense.

The rest was ok. I liked the little town of misfit paranormals and the variety of shifters.

3.5 Stars. I liked this, I liked the MC's, I liked the small town vibe. However, what can and does drive me crazy about fated mates is how quickly the I love you's come. Just because someone is fated to be yours does not mean that you will fall in love within days. For me the romance just came to quickly - hence the 3 star rating. However, I loved all the characters so I will definitely read another in the series.

Updated 10/21/22 to add my comments about the audiobook.
Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

I loved this audiobook!

I read this story with my eyes a little over 2 years ago and I loved it. There’s not a lot that I can add to my original review (below) except to say what a wonderful job John Solo did performing the audiobook. I should also note that since my original review Morgan Brice has written several other stories set in the Fox Hollow Zodiac world. Several of them are novellas but there is one new novel: Again which is great. Not all of these are listed on Amazon as part of the series so here’s a link to the series on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/series/2956.... I almost forgot to say that my husband and I listened to this together on a road trip and he really enjoyed it, too, even though he is not a fan of M/M romance. 😊

Original review:
A great start to a new series!

I enjoyed reading the Huntsman so much; it has so many different things going on to make it a really interesting book. A fox shifter is being hunted, his fated mate wolf shifter rescues him when his car breaks down, a town that is shifter friendly and home to different kinds of shifters, and humans with psychic abilities.

Liam fled for his life and left everything behind when a friend told him there was a bounty on his head and he was being tracked by a Huntsman. A professor of his from his university days offered him a job in a remote town in the Adirondacks but he was going to turn it down until his situation changed dramatically and quickly.

Russ is grieving the loss of his husband two years ago. When he gets the call that someone needs a tow, he is stunned to find out that it may be his fated mate. He thought fated mates was just a myth until he experienced the pull for himself.

There is more to the Huntsman than what we know from the blurb and I loved how Morgan Brice kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next. I loved Russ's brother, Lowe, who stood by him when Russ came out to his pack and they threw him out. They moved to Fox Hollow ten years ago and are a vital part of the community.

The story grabbed me right from the beginning and didn't let up until I finished it. Even then, it just whetted my appetite for more stories set in this world. The town of Fox Hollow has an interesting history that is explored in this story and I'm sure it will also come into play in future books. There were several secondary characters in this book that I hope we will see get primary roles in future stories. I can't wait to read more.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

A fantastic start to the series!

The beginning pulled me in instantly; it was intense. Liam’s fear poured off the pages and I was officially hooked, wanting to know the what and whys.

Russ’s pain and sorrow made me well up. The way he spoke to Anthony, made my heart ache - I wanted to hug him so freaking badly.

Russ and Liam were beautiful together and their chemistry shined throughout.

Russ and Liam arguing with their wolf/fox side was entertaining. The fox was sassy and had the attitude to boot.

A story with mystery, intrigue, suspense and a sweet romance - couldn’t ask for any more.

3.75 rounded up.

I did like this although there was a bit of a rough start. At first it did this back slide with the POVs which I found annoying. POV A goes up to Saturday night, then POV B takes over but goes back to Saturday morning and goes through their day. So you had over lapping timelines, but later that didn't happen so much which I appreciated. It's also not clear about the Hunstman and what the scoop is with these guys, but on the whole I liked Liam a great deal and how he was smaller and scared for his life but when the chips where down he reacted.

I also liked that Russ's former husband was not portrayed as "less than" because he wasn't a fated mate. He had loved him and they were well matched. Sometimes the fated mate is seen as superior and you get these little throw-aways that maybe the sex was't as good, or the former husband didn't understand them the same, but it wasn't like that which I appreciated.

So on the whole I enjoyed it and would follow up with other stories.

"Huntsman" is the first volume in a new series entitled "Fox Hollow Zodiac" by one and only Morgan Brice. As we all know, in the case of this author even if the series is new, the universe is not and that's what I really love about "Fox Hollow Zodiac". I admit, there aren't many literal indications that link "Huntsman" to the author's other series yet, but every Morgan Brice's fan knows what to look for in her works to be absolutely sure in which universe the series is set. What's important, this new story shows us a colorful, vast and addictive universe of numerous Morgan Brice's urban fantasy novels from a completely different angle. We get to know this world no longer through the eyes of humans, but through the eyes of shapeshifters. In this case it's essential that shifters, although they often live among us, ordinary mortals, and lead a life similar to ours, have their own legends, stories, fairy tales, myths. The title Huntsman is an example of such a legend which turned out to be much more than just a child's fairy tale. In short, this new face of Morgan Brice's universe is simply brilliant, fantastic, one of a kind.

Some time ago came out another novel by the author set in the same universe in which there was an allusion to the fated mates motif, which referred to the human world. In "Huntsman" Morgan Brice had the opportunity to fully focus on this topic in relation to shifters. Fated mates trope is very popular in paranormal MM romances, but Morgan Brice managed to add a new dimension to it. She shows this topic in such a natural way that it is simply amazing. The readers themselves quickly forget that Liam and Russ don't really known each other very long, because their relationship and the dynamics of it are presented in a truly natural manner, which is great. In fact, sometimes the characters themselves have to remind us that they met each other not so long ago and their relationship is only in its early stage. The point of this story is not whether and to what extent Liam and Russ are a perfect match, but what they are like when they are together, how they build their relationship. I think that's what makes their relationship so real, true and noteworthy.

As for the plot of "Huntsman", I think it is quite simple, which gives the author a great chance to focus on many other elements of the story. Thanks to this fact, we have the opportunity to get to know and feel the universe of the series, characters, problems they have to face and discoveries they make concerning the world they live in. I think it is also very interesting that, as the title of the series suggests, there is a zodiac theme in the novel. Although it is not yet fully developed, so it is rather a curiosity to us, reading this book we really want to read more about it in future. It is something new, and knowing Morgan Brice's works, we know that she's able to create something deeper, more magical and unique than anyone else from any motif, trope, idea. Will the zodiac be more important in future volumes of "Fox Hollow Zodiac"? We will see!

Finally, I would like to write a few words about the Fox Hollow community. I really like the idea of a shifter-friendly town full of all sorts of people, from shifters who change into some wild animals to those who have more domesticated forms, and to people with supernatural powers. What's more, the thing I also like about Fox Hollow is that its residents stick together when something or someone threatens the person they know, someone who's one of them. This town really works as an additional incentive to read this book and other novels in the series in the future. This place enchanted me and I will read other novels set in this town with real pleasure. I just fell in love with it.

To sum up, Morgan Brice once again showed us why we read her novels with such eagerness. "Huntsman" is a great start of a new, inviting series that charms us with its colorful world and makes us fall in love with its interesting characters. This story is really worth reading, the more so as it was written with admirable care to show the natural and believable relationship between the fated mates.

„Huntsman” to pierwszy tom nowej serii autorstwa uwielbianej przeze mnie Morgan Brice, zatytułowanej „Fox Hollow Zodiac”.

Huntsman is the first book in Morgan Brice’s Fox Hollow Zodiac series. I have enjoyed the author’s romantic suspense and urban fantasy stories, so I was interested to check out her foray into the shifter world. One area where Brice always excels is in developing her settings. Brice’s books have a wonderful sense of place, whether it is real or fictional. She gives such detail and really manages to capture the essence of a location and build it richly into her books. That is the case here as well, both with the larger region of the Adirondack Mountains, as well as with the town of Fox Hollow itself. I will say that the town is pretty much perfectly idyllic in the way that many romance-land small towns tend to be. The people are warm and welcoming, and the town is adorable with a vast array of businesses that meet every need, and with seemingly never ending financial resources courtesy of the local Fox Institute. It is a little over-the-top perfect, but still, I think Brice does a nice job developing the town and it seems like it should be a fun setting for the series.

I have been on a paranormal kick lately, so I was excited to read this. The blurb gives you the gist of the story, so I'm not gonna bore you with a recap. Let me tell ya, Liam and Russ are so perfect for each other. Liam’s fox and Russ’ wolf are both sassy, snarky, and fun. I love them! This book had suspense, a few twists and turns, and a great start to a new series. I hope we get to see more of Liam and Russ in future books.

This is the first “shifter” novel from Morgan Brice, author of one of my favorite urban fantasy series, Badlands. The novel starts off with a bang as our main character, Liam Reynard, narrowly escapes a hit man’s attempt on his life. With nowhere else to go and unsure who he can trust, he drives to the small town of Fox Hollow, where an old professor friend has recently offered him a job as a librarian. Liam is a fox shifter (you can kinda tell that from his name, a literary reference to Reynard the Fox). Liam soon discovers that he is not the only shifter in Fox Hollow, which has become a sort of sanctuary for shifters of all kinds – including Russ, the local mechanic, who is also a volunteer fireman and a wolf shifter. This is a thriller/mystery but it’s also a M/M romance, with one of the hottest “first kiss” scenes I’ve ever read. With a librarian and a fireman as main characters, there’s nerd appeal here as well as fireman fantasy appeal. I love the small-town ambience Morgan Brice has created with Fox Hollow, and I love how the townspeople band together as a “found family” in a time of crisis. I’m looking forward to the next novel in this new series!

This was an easy-to-read fated mates romance with a bit of mystery and suspense topped with a whole lot of sweet

We open with Liam who is running from a killer and doing a bang-up job of it -
Enter Russ - his white knight in a tow truck
Their animals knew right away they were fated but it took our guys a bit more time

I fell in love with Liam the moment I met him. He is a little neurotic, and his imagination sometimes runs away with him... FAR away - lol
Russ, however, was a little more grounded and IMO the perfect partner to balance Liam

When fires start erupting and hikers begin disappearing Liam begins to believe he may not have escaped his hunter so cleanly and is responsible for bringing the destruction to the town
Could he be right? Or is it just bad timing?

I would have liked more background on the characters, the shifter/human dynamics, the town, its "magic". I have all kinds of questions.

I had read this prior to listening to the audio version -which is dual narration and did a great job of bringing the cast to life - and enjoyed it both times. Easy to follow sweet romance with plenty of heat

I was about half way through the first chapter when I realized, I wanted to be friends with Liam and Russ. Liam is perfectly dramatic, just right, not overly like some (wrong) people in the book thought. Russ is just the quintessential nice guy. He would be the berfect cuddle buddy for this little straigh gitl. This is a pretty short book, only took me about 2 hrs, but it magagened to pack a whallop. There was new beginnings, sweet romance, danger and action. A bit of mystery and a hint of the supernatural round out this little book and make it well worth reading over and over again.

“Huntsman” by Morgan Brice is the first book in the ‘Fox Hollow Zodiac’ series and features Liam Reynard, a fox shifter, who flees for his life to a unique hamlet called Fox Hollow and meets Russell Lowe, a wolf shifter who isn’t sure he can believe that he’s met his fated mate. Unfortunately, danger has come to Fox Hollow, and these two are in the eye of the storm.

This adult paranormal gay romance introduces a shifter society that has formed an enclave that is a sanctuary. Liam arrives there under less than auspicious circumstances and is reluctant to trust, so it’s heartwarming to watch his gradual acceptance into the close-knit society. Russell’s tragic backstory and caring interactions with the others in his live made him such an attractive character and I enjoyed the interactions between these two. I always like learning something new, and a skulk of foxes has now been added to my mental files, and I will have to look into key-finders, since I tend to lose several items regularly, lol.

It was fun watching each man argue with his respective animal, especially Liam’s “divafox” persona. I thought this was an entertaining introduction to a new series and I look forward to seeing some of the characters from this author’s other series make cameos in future stories.

As is always the case with this author’s works, this story is a lovely blend of fantasy, suspense, and romance, and I can’t wait to read more in this series.

Liam is a fox shifter running for his life. Russ is a wolf shifter who’s excited to find his mate.

I’m a sucker for fated mates books. I liked this one because of the large variety of shifter types. It was a good story but I felt like something was missing. I liked the characters and loved the town. Maybe it was just not enough history for the main characters. It’s definitely worth reading if shifters and fated mates are the readers thing.

Loved this

The blurb didn’t do this book justice. I enjoyed every min of this book. Had a little suspense, they worked on their love instead of jumping in. The fox and the wolf dialog had me giggling. The writing was great the smexy was hawt and the side characters well I really hope they get books, which leads me to the concussion of book two. Would have thought book two would have been about the many side characters but it doesn’t seem to be. Which is weird. So I guess I’ll wait until the book after so weird this flow

I was really so surprised by this story. This is a new to me author that I picked up at a book convention because I like supporting MM authors at main stream book cons. I wasn’t sure what to expected but I really loved this story. There is a lot of drama and a mystery that needs solving. It is very well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. I look forward to reading more in this series. #CMCon24
