Manifest Destiny

Manifest Destiny, a phrase coined in 1845, is the idea that the United States is destined—by God, its advocates believed—to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. The philosophy drove 19th-century U.S. territorial expansion and was used to justify the forced removal of Native Americans and other groups from their homes. John L. O’Sullivan, the editor of a magazine was supposed to have invented the term in an essay in which he advocated annexing Texas and accused European powers to interfere in the politics of the USA.

The Trail of Tears or Indian Removals

In 1838 and 1839, President Andrew Jackson decided to remove Native Americans from their land to leave room to settlers and sometimes to speculators who made large profits. At the beginning, tribes resisted but finally federal troops were sent and Native Americans were forced to leave their land. Most of the removals were awful: families were separated, many people died of hunger and ill-treatment.Ten of thousands of Native Americans were forced away from their home and this remains a sad memory for Indian tribes still nowadays.

The Transcontinental Railroad

In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered two railroad companies to build a transcontinental railroad that would link the USA from east to west. There was a competition between the two companies so that although the labor was hard because of the many dangers arising in the construction, the railroad was finished in 1869.It had a big impact on the west as it became 'nearer' to the east and people rushed to participate in the Gold Rush.
