She spent her life running from them. Now she’s going to school with them.

For as long as she could remember, Kennedy’s mother had called her a demon, but she’d never believed her; her mother was ill. And then the Archangel Gabriel appeared trying to kill her. When divine intervention steps in, Kennedy finds herself whisked away to Greenwood Preparatory University.

Hellfire Academy, as the students call it, is home to nephilim like her. To the outside world it’s an exclusive college. To some of the student body, it’s a training academy—and one of the professors is Gabriel. Kennedy has the year to prove that she can stay out of trouble, which would be easy to do if she wasn't getting distracted by an archangel.

When Kennedy’s roommate has a vision that the college will be attacked, it’s up to Kennedy to stop that from happening. Only it’s hard to know who to trust when you’re the one everyone thinks is evil.

Cheryl works in an office by day. By night she leads a (not-so) secret life DJing, and throughout it all, is constantly scribbling away as the plot bunnies demand constant attention.

Her first novel was written when she should have been revising for her exams. While it is unlikely to ever see the light of day, it was the start of long relationship with the evil plot bunnies of doom.

A need to do more than just one subject led her to the University of Hull, where she graduated with an honours degree in American Studies. For the third year of the four year degree, she was able to call Baton Rouge home. Since then, Louisiana has claimed a large chunk of her heart, and remains a place she will always consider home.

LSU was where she discovered FanFiction and currently writes (mainly) CSI:NY stories and a Rescue: Special Ops story.

When not transcribing the stories of the angels and archangels, working, or DJing, she is at the beck and call of three cats – all of whom rank higher in the household than she does.

Kennedy (Dora aka FMC) scrapes by working several jobs just to make ends meet and help her mother. Who has had a mental breakdown or at least thats what Kennedy thinks until Gabriel (yes the angel) turns up and turns her life upside down. Angels, Demons, Nephilim and a Prophet this book has it all. I especially liked the banter between Kennedy and Ty it made me laugh. This is great start to this series and i loved reading it so much. Ill be waiting on the next book comes to see what happens next. Cant wait

This is a well written first book with a kick ass, strong, sassy and independent female mc and boy is it good! There’s a slow build up to the story as the author introduces you to this incredible world and it’s take on good vs evil mixed with romance and fantasy. Fallen angels, nephilim, archangels, human, not everyone is what they seem!!

Slow Going, but Potential

Demon Born is the first book in the Hellfire Academy series and it definitely has potential as a series. I love the story idea and Kennedy is pretty great as far as main characters go. My biggest complaint with this book is the slow progressing of the story.

I loved Kennedy as a main character. She's pretty fierce and responsible as she struggles to hold down jobs and take care of her mother. Aside from her, though, I really didn't like any of the other characters until later in the story. A lot of that is due to the pacing of the book. It feels like about the first 3/4 of the book is spent crawling through a slow, SLOW mystery. Nobody seems to want to fill Kennedy in on anything, but they're quick to mistrust her and pass the blame to her. It's a little understandable when you consider her heritage, but I think all that mistrust explains why so many like Kennedy end up on the bad side. It isn't until that last quarter of the book, roughly, that the characters start talking to each other and you really find out what's going on (although you don't find out everything by the end of the book).

I feel like the next book in the series will go better now that some of the mystery has been revealed by the end of book 1. The rest of the characters are much more likeable by the end of the book and I think I'll enjoy getting to read more about what's going on in book 2, but if it starts out crawling like this book did and most of the first half of the book is shrouded in mystery, I feel like I would probably just walk away from it. I'm all for keeping some mystery in books, but I don't like feeling like I've been left in the dark and everybody hates or mistrusts everybody else.

If you like tons of mystery and a very slow burn type of story, I think this book is right up your alley. Even if you're not a big fan of that type of story, but can deal with it for most of a book, I think your patience will be rewarded in book 2. I love the concept of this series and really like the characters by the end of the book. Kennedy is also a fantastic main character and I'd like to read more about what happens to her next.

OMG, and by that, I mean Oh. My. Gabriel. I love when authors blaspheme and make the divine sexy and delicious. Good job C.L. Coffey, you sinner.

Kennedy is plucking her way through every goodness-challenged day. Phoenix is only the last stop in a long line of cities she and her mom have lived in, on the run from her mom's monster plagued schizo-mind. It's hot there, she has two jobs, and people suck.

But wait, there is more, a guy with a sword has just shown up. He has sexy green eyes and a psychotic need to off her. The dude attacked her on her way home, and she got hit by a car—a rough day at the office.

Of course, she doesn't expect the same guy to abduct her in Las Vegas, then tells her that he's Gabriel, an Archangel. And that he has decided not to kill her, but instead send her to the most high schoolish college EVAH! Yeah, Gabriel is a complicated Archangel.

Kennedy, on the other hand, not so much. She has one job--guard her charge. Sadly he's a douche she wants to smack into next Tuesday.

I loved this. It was tons of fun, and many existential conundrums come to light in this book. When someone earns their wings, why do they have to leave their own body and take on another? The author's concept. Why are demons impossible? If angels think there are parts of the bible that are myths, what should humans take as God's word?

And the whole earning wings thing... if you have to leave your body, is that fortunate for Tyrone? Or is it sad for the rest of us who lose part of our identity?

Augh!
Really?

And Gabriel now?
OMG already.

Look at this. I'm at the end of my review, and I'm not even speaking in complete sentences. I recommend this new series. I really loved the ending. I LOVED the cliffhanger! You need to be a particular sort of demented to say something of that nature.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.

Demon Born is the first book I read by the author and while there were certain parts in the story I really liked, I don't think this is for me :(

Worldbuilding:
Was good. The author describes all scenes and environments very clearly and detailed. We quickly find out what's the deal between the (arch)angels and the Fallen (and the nephilim) and so the story starts off with a bang.

Character development:
Was decent. Kennedy gets thrown into a whole new setting, very strict rules and people that pretty much hate her guts so yeah, saying she had it rough was an understatement. She has a lot of fight in her and is not easily beaten down. But... she was the sole person looking after her mother, how could she just leave her behind? I would at least demand to say goodbye myself etc... but that might just be me.
I liked Gabriel, he has changed a lot during the course of the book at least. I do wonder though why he took it upon himself to watch over Kennedy. We didn't really get much information about him, unfortunately.
Leigh-Ann and Ty were both good additions to the story, with sufficient depth.

Pacing and flow:
Were decent. As I've said before, it started with a bang, then slowed to a crawl before finally picking up the pace in the last few chapters. While the middle part was of course essential for the story to come to its full potential, I just felt it dragged on too long without anything to get the blood pumping again.

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors and there was no sex described (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all the plot was good and has potential, but unfortunately, I struggled a lot with some decisions made by the characters and with the flow in the middle. Will I be reading future books in this series? At the moment I don't think so, but who knows!

Demon Born is the first book in the Hellfire Academy Series. Kennedy (Dora) is a young woman who has always had to drop out of school in order to take care of her mother while always moving to a new city. Gabriel is The Archangel Gabriel who has come to kill Kennedy. Destiny intervenes and Kennedy's life was not only spared, but she also finds out that she's a nephilim, born from a Fallen Angel and a Human. Gabriel takes Kennedy to the academy so that she can learn how to properly control and harness her powers while gaining an education. At the academy, she makes friends and enemies. As Kennedy and Gabriel continue to work closely together, their attraction and chemistry continues to grow. Not everyone is as they seem. All of the students are either human or nephilim, but no one knows the whole truth. When the school is attacked, will Kennedy be able to save her fellow classmates or will she be captured or killed?

I enjoyed Demon Born. I found it to be a well-written slow buildup story. Kennedy is one of my favorite characters. She's sassy, independent, and lives by her own moral code no matter that she's supposed to be part evil. Gabriel is broody, strong, and a bit conflicting. He has always known what is right and true, but can be blinded by it at times. Demon Born does begin a bit slow because there is so much background that needs to be laid in order for us, the reader, to fully appreciate the world-building and characters. Ms. Coffey puts a new spin on the good vs. evil mixed with romance and fantasy. I do have to warn you that even though a lot of my questions were answered throughout the book, it does end on a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Thank you Booksprout for gifting me an e-ARC of this book and introducing me to a new author. This was my honest opinion.

I have some serious whiplash from this book. The idea behind it is amazing and thrilling but I think the pace of the book let it down a little. I feel like nothing really happened until 2/3s of the way in and then everything happened all at once with a new announcement every other page. Similarly, apart from our leading lady (who I loved!), I didn't particularly start to like or connect with any of the other characters until that point either. I could maybe understand it if the first 2/3s were setting the story up but even then, there's so much background missing I was left a little befuddled until the characters finally started communicating with each other and answering questions.

Nevertheless, as I said, I loved the idea behind this story. It was interesting and a fresh take on the whole Angel/Fallen Angel/Nephilim storyline. I absolutely adored Kennedy (AKA Dora). She was fierce, protective, loving, and completely misunderstood. Despite all the bad things life had thrown at her, all she wanted to do was go to college and look after her mum. Likewise, I adored Leigh-Ann. She was absolutely horrid at first but when she's cracked open, the character she brings to the story and her connection with Kennedy is amazing. I did think she was a little too mean at first so the change-around was a little jarring but I got over that pretty quickly. And Gabriel, I didn't really have any feels for him until my heart started fluttering about 5 pages before the cliff-hanger ending...

Overall, I enjoyed this book and will definitely keep my eye out for others in the series especially because it was left right in the middle of the action - cliffhangers, can't live with them but can't wait to jump right off the edge into the next book, am I right? It takes some time to get into but definitely worth it. Book 2 please!

“Demon Born”, the first installment in the new UF “Hellfire Academy” Series by C.L. Coffey, introduces the reader to a whole new world populated by Angels, Demons and Nephilim.

Dora Kennedy is a young woman accustomed to a life on the run, moving frequently through the country and constantly hiding, due to her mother’s illness, who suffers from paranoia (or doesn’t she?) and is convinced Angels are trying to kill them. Kennedy’s day (don’t call her Dora!) is about to get from bad to worst as, first she loses one of her jobs, then gets attacked on her way home from the other, and finally ends up in the hospital due to some freaking lighting accident….time to move again ☹ Once in Las Vegas, Kennedy tries to go on with her life… working at a dinner, taking care of her sick mother and going through the motions, until her attacker appears anew and brings her to Greenwood Preparatory University. Good news: Kennedy would have a shot at academy education; Bad news: her mother is not paranoid, the angels are actually after her, she is a Nephelim, who they would love to kill on sight. Kennedy’s life goes from worse to worst to absolutely nuts, and the presence of the Archangel Gabriel taking a special interest in her, does not really help the situation

Intrigued? You should! C.L. Coffey vision of Nephilim as demon/human hybrids who are the “bad guys” in the eyes of the Angels is refreshing and very original. Her Angels are as flawed as the humans, which makes for a very entertaining reading. With a fast-paced plot full of twists and turns and a veritable strong FMC capable to make the best of any situation, the book offers a very good introduction to a very promising new UF paranormal series.

It was the cover that caught my eye when I was looking at the available ARCs. So I wanted to know more and I went to read the synopsis which totally intrigued me.

Since "Vampire Academy", I have not read anything with this term (Academy) in the title while there is a lot of books at the moment except that it's mostly Reverse Harem. Here it's not the case and I say good because we focus more on some highly interesting characters.

We discover a world where angels exist. They are one of the people I like to see in paranormal romances so it's cheerfully that I started reading this title.

From the first pages, I identified myself with Kennedy when we don't have much in common. I enjoyed following her in her rediscovery of the world and who she is after having been confronted with stressful events. I liked the relationship with Gabriel. We can feel the growing tension.

The author's pen is fluid. I was caught up in the story from the start and almost read it all at once. I was angry when someone came to disturb me for lunch. Once the meal is eaten, I plunged back into it until the end.

I discovered the author thanks to this title and I am delighted. To better understand the universe, I might read the Angel series. What is clear is that the book two is already on my wishlist.

This book just didn't pull me into it. Well, there's a lot of angst & high school type drama, though the main character is 21 & this is supposed to be a college setting. So it felt very immature. It's hard for me to enjoy that kind of angst, as I hated high school for that reason. This was very slow flow, though the descriptions were good. But the world building really isn't there. There is a bit of explanation for a few things since its a learn as you go for the main female character -who is thrust into the world of Nephilim, fallen angels, arc angels, & saints, and then a religious type war between them all, with mere humans stuck in the middle. But I was left lost & confused by a bunch of the lacking world building & why things were happening as they were. The FMC was very flat, nothing really about her made me care about what happened to her. I don't know what the outcome will be, but it did NOT feel like it would end up as a romance of any sort. None of the guys introduced gave off any indicators that they might be the romantic lead in the story, & to be honest, none of them even interested me to want them to be the MMC.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

⚖️⚖️ ONE WILD EXTRAVAGANZA⚖️⚖️
Thrilling! Coffey delivers with this incredible, heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping, page flipping bombshell, hooking you from the start and reeling you in for the duration, thrusting this baby to life flawlessly. Observing the taxing trials and challenging tribulations, unveiling dramatic twists and daunting turns, boundaries are heightened and exploited, baring the fervent facts, dubious deals and electrifying escapades, drawing deep, grasping a fierce determination with such intensity and vigor, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, underlying threats, danger and suspense surges as tension spirals melding this jewel together fluidly. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits adding depth and diversity, transforming into genuine charismatic personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels like you can just reach out and touch it. Amazing job Coffey, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

I want to give this ARC 4 stars, but a few things are holding me back. (I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.)

The story is interesting if a bit all over the place and doesn't make a ton of sense. I am still a bit confused about the history of the nephilim and potentials. I also don't understand some of the decisions people are making... and that brings me to the characters.

I like a few of the secondary characters (they have enough depth to them and a personality, which is great), but I'm not super fond of Kennedy, or Gabriel. I think they are pretty immature and the character-building isn't amazing.

The pacing is slightly off and there's something about the writing that is disjointed. I'm interested, but I keep getting knocked out of the story to figure out the point of the conversation that I just read.

The book was pretty free of typos/misspellings/grammar problems- yayy!

I do like the action and the bit of mystery to it. I'm trying to decide if I'm interested enough to read the next book... I think I am. So overall, the book for me is a success, and with minor adjustments, could be pretty great.

I was intrigued by this story just by reading the synopsis. I found I did really enjoy this book, but when I started reading it, I wasn’t quite in a place for a story like this. After stopping for a couple weeks, I did finally finish the story and I wasn’t disappointed. I finished the book within an evening and the story just got better and better. I really do look forward to reading the rest of this series as I want to know what happens to the characters and whether or not the relationship I want to happen, does happen, because it would be beautiful.

Kennedy is a young woman who has known a life of running. With her mother being a bit out of step with reality, Kennedy has to take care of her mother full time and had to give up on finishing high school. She desperately wants to go to college and after a run in with someone who wants to kill her, she finds herself in college and learning things she didn’t know were possible. Behind in her college courses, Kennedy has to work hard to catch up with course work and has to put her trust in someone else to keep an eye on her mother.

Kennedy is taking care of her mentally ill mother constantly on the run even though Kennedy has always assumed it was because of her but maybe its not. Trouble finds them in Phonex in form of Gabriel and he tries to kill Kennedy more then once in the beginning. Kennedy has one option go to and Academy and train be a protector to a guy thats not very nice. His sister Le Ann has some serious premonitions about the school and her brother Harrison.

The romantic element is kind of a slow burn though. Problems were mostly the confusing parts Tyson his constant disappearances i didn't see how his relationship with LeAnn developed so I couldn't see them as a couple. Harrison his girlfriend another confusing couple its like she's controlling him at times then there break-up was strange and Harrison his actions threw out the book were odd. So I believe this series has potential but some areas of the book didn't have allot of clarity for me but I would read the next book to see what direction it goes in next.

I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

I was given the opportunity to receive an ARC. Before reading this book, I had no clue who the author was but reading the blurb peaked my interest.

I absolutely love strong willed and compassionate Kennedy, who’s always placing the well-being of her mother above herself. With a testy roommate (and maybe potential best friend), the forbidden fruit male interest, so many other incredible characters the doom and gloom of a threat and a great storyline, why wouldn’t you want to read this book?

So, well I impatiently but happily wait for the rest of the books in this series, I will be catching up on The Louisiangel Series which I highly recommend reading first before you get into this book. I don’t believe it’s required but if you want to know the back stories of a few characters and events mentioned in the book, read The Louisiangel Series.

Maybe her Mom isn’t crazy after all…

Dora "Kennedy" has been taking care of her mom for a long time. The doctors can't decide what type of mental illness her mother has but she's definitely delusional because she thinks Kennedy's father was a fallen angel. Then one day Kennedy is kidnapped by angels, almost killed, and finds herself enrolled in a college for Nephilim. Maybe her mom wasn't crazy after all.

This is a classic Good vs Evil plotline updated for the 21st century. It's a good book for the starter of a series and includes just enough backstory to whet the reader's appetite. The college setting provides plenty of characters to draw from for future books. I received a free copy of this book but my review is voluntary and honest. It was an enjoyable read and I'm curious to see what the next book is like.

Kennedy is a young woman that has been caring for her mother for years. Her mom has been telling her for years she's a demon and they've moved every time her mother insists. She is convinced her mom has had a breakdown. When the Guardian Angel, Gabriel, tries to kill her and she escapes she wonders what's going on. This book is exciting and opens a whole new world for Kennedy. She's going to an exclusive college, but doesn't know who to trust. She does make friends and they will all have to work really hard to protect the nonmagical students and the school. Good thing Gabriel is a new teacher and can help. Help distract her. Plus he's decided he won't kill her. She's making friends and it's going to take all of them to save the school and everyone in it. Our heroine has always been called a demon, but never thought much of it until she was sent to a training school for paranormals. Now no one will let her forget it.

This is book one of the series.

This is a paranormal romance, of sorts, with angels and demons as the main protagonists. The story is well written, but suffers a little bit from first book syndrome. It is always hard to get all the introductory background into a first story while maintaining a solid flow to the plot line. This one does a decent job of describing the setting and some of the characters, while others need a bit more to really understand. The plot is good and I like where things are going, so I will be intrigued to see the next book.

Recommended.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy for giving my two cents. We meet Dora aka Kennedy who has been taking care of her mom for as long as she can remember. One evening she is attacked and then hit by a car. Remarkably she healed fast from her ordeal except for the lightning scars that run up her arms. She decides to move her and her mom far away and her mom says Vegas is the place to go. Kennedys mom snaps and calls her demon and thr next thing she knows she's being kidnapped by the same guy that tried to kill her before the move. Then she is at a school in the middle of the mountain where she is given a second chance to prove herself of be killed. Whats thr worse thing that can happen? Secrets, lies, and drama make for a good read.

Dora "Kennedy" is working two jobs to support herself and her sick mother. She is attacked by Archangel Gabriel trying to kill her because she is a nephilim. Attending and graduating from Greenwood Preparatory University while being a "guardian angel" to her charge is the only way she is given to save herself by Gabriel. Overwhelmed by school work and hated by her room mate are only the beginning. How will Kennedy survive? This exciting, page turning story has me eagerly awaiting the next in the series!

Kennedy learns that her father is a fallen angel and the archangels want to kill her. Instead of killing her however they send her to University for Nephilims, Hellfire Academy where she is told she will be the guardian angel for a human student. Between studying and learning her lessons she must also look out for her human. On top of that she learns that the fallen angels are going to attack the school. Lots happening, a real page turner with a few laughs thrown in to the mix. A good read. I would recommend this book.

So this book was free of the epic amounts of typos and grammar issues I have seen in books I review lately. And for that alone I enjoyed it. But let's get to the real stuff. The characters were my fave part of this book. They were interesting, fleshed out, and well written. Something any reader can enjoy. Its always best when the writer makes you feel like you know the character rather than just reading the character. Some are a mystery, but I have a feeling that is how it is supposed to be because future revelations will be in store...or so I hope. The middle dips a bit in the action department but the beginning and end are awesome. Worth a read.

Kennedy's mother is ill, because of this Kennedy has kind of a rough go of it. Things get worse one night when someone tries to kill her. She soon finds herself at a special academy where supernatural beings mix with humans. But of course, trouble follows.

When Kennedy got to the school I started to lose a little interest, mostly because these college age or older kids were just super immature. But I kept going and it was awesome. There was drama, mystery, forbidden love...everything you would want in a story. I would definitely continue this series.

Dora grew up moving from town to town with her mother she never knew her father and her mother just told her that they were in love but now with her mother’s illness she calls Dora a demon and that her father was a fallen. Dora knew that something was wrong but she thought that it was her mother’s illness until she was attacked by a man outside of her work he had a knife and then that knife started to grow, Dora started to run but then the man called her name and then Dora was hit by a car. There’s so much going on in this story it’s exciting and entertaining and I can’t wait to read book 2, I loved this story and I definitely recommend this book.

I started the book and got so involved, I just had to finish it. It's about Kennedy who is a mixture of fallen angel and human, who seems to always find trouble, or trouble finds her. After Gabriel tries to kill her, he decides to give her a second chance to prove herself. She is a guardian angel to a college student at the new college she is enrolled in. Well worth reading. There is mystery and adventure. Can't wait for the next installment.

Original idea, empathetic and humorous writing.

Read it one go, did not want to put it down, loved the characters.

I think there is more to our heroines shorthand Gabriel knows or has been revealed yet.

So want to know what happens next, hope I get the ARC for book 2.

Definitely not boring and not happy either. Strong plot and character development.

Highly recommended if you want to laugh, swallow a lump in throat and smile.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There is a paranormal romance core and some magic school tropes, but I find that it was original enough that I was being repeatedly surprised.

The characters are both infuriating and lovable, both mean that you do care what they do. The twists and turns are breathtaking, as appearances of good and evil switch with new details.

I really want to find out more, and look forward to the next books.

Plenty of action, suspense and magic. The characters are interesting, likable and independent thinkers. You will meet angels, the good ones and demons, the bad ones, or was it really the other way around? The plot is easy to follow and has a lot of unexpected tvists and turns. The suspense will keep you on the edge, you have to keep reading to see what happens next. I am really looking forward to reading more like this.

A fantastic paranormal story filled with mystery, intrigue, suspense, friendship, love interests, action, a fiery feisty female lead character and plenty of interesting supporting characters with different individual personalities and quirks. Well written, brilliantly developed diverse characters with great chemistry and a gripping storyline. Looking forward to finding out what happens next in this series by C. L. Coffey.
